Well I was an eye witness and the D Zero was faster or would have been if the young man sailing it had more experience in the boat. The problem was that he was racing Bytes during their Nationals and obstructed the leading boats, not his fault, he joins a race...so he races. The fact that he was mixing it with the leading boats must mean something.
I had not seen a D Zero before and I was very impressed, so modern and neat with clever ideas.

Upwind it certainly is faster than a Laser (so by extension should be the same against a Byte). Reaching the same. The only point of sail I found that a Laser could stay with the D-0 is dead downwind.

From what I saw from the rib the D-Zero looked well suited to the flat and light conditions we experienced, quick on all points of the course and certainly acclerated nicely. ![]() |

Needs the stickers on!
Our experience is the boat goes better upwind than downwind, partially I expect from its comfort which encourages hiking. As igrf says, the shape that works well upwind is more sensitive to waves downwind. Edited by SimonW99 - 26 Aug 14 at 12:55pm |

Given the 10% difference in likely PY's, that much is clear, but I guess I'm more wondering where and when the gobbling is done. I'm guessing on a reach, especially in planing conditions, but it would be nice to hear some eye witness reports.

No real data as the D-Zeros tagged onto the racing, and swapped helms doing demos etc, but certainly even with class newbies looked quick in the light stuff giving the other single handers a run for their money. |

Given my experience of a D-0 vs a Laser then a Byte should be left far behind.

Well they dine out quite well on Lasers, so i would have thought Bytes wouldn't provide much of a meal for them.. The Only weak area I can see with a D0 is downhill in waves, where they can be a bit nosey. |
