Notice also no messing about with cleats. I reckon he is holding the jib with his foot.

Got that photo in Eileen Ramsay's 'Dinghy Days', an utterly beautiful book.  Often wondered why the kite was flown like that, especialy as it had long died out in yachts.  Thanks for clarifying.

Mags
The wind looks to be on stern quarter and hence very little heeling - just enough for the helm to hike slightly for comfort. What intrigues me more is why have about 3ft of unused mast at the top?

If she is 206 then she is a Jack Holt Charm design built by Holt in 1950 and called Kudu.

With a 25ft mast and very little beam I suspect that is a heavy wind sail. It wasnt unkown to reef in those days. No bend in the mast to de power the sail and the only use the kicker had was to stop the boom flying high down wind.
In Stepensons book "When dinghy`s delight" (Ithink) he writes of stopping and shaking out the reef before going downwind and then reefing again at the bottom of the course to go upwind. Much bigger courses with longer legs then.

Also that picture could have been from the time when the Merlins changed from the 25ft mast height to the 22ft one so the sails may have been made for the newer mast.

Here's a nice canoe.
