Thanks 2547. Your fingers are faster than mine; two finger typing watching the Commonwealth Games sorry to repeat you.

If you're rolling don't dump the kicker, don't kneel in the middle of the boat and keep some board down. I can't for the life of me work out what you were doing with the jib.

If you like I could come down and take you through a level two course. You could learn to tack and gybe plus learn the famous Five Essentials. Then there might be some hope.

GRF it takes practice, but as said above, don't dump the kicker,, the head will go past the masthead and induce roll. Keep some board down, or all (the boat is quite skiffy) and sit on opposite sides.
Use the dangly to stabilise the jib. Yes if it hasn't had non slip applied - it'll need it. Off the boom sheeting is great when you get used to it. At 2:1 and using the kicker it makes the boat very responsive. Remember to use the lowers to control bend and flattening. We set the shrouds quite hard - against Mike's advice and the boat seemed to track better and the rig was more stable. You'll need time, but it is a great boat .... and not once did I find it rolly!!!

Centre board hard down, jib running by the lee poled out, goose winged but slightly hardened up say 5 -10 degrees up from a mean dead run, but with the tide correcting.
Got to remember Trevs first ever go in a boat other than the Alto, so he's feeling his way and we're sailing a tad defensively. Normally, if not on the side, he'd sit astride the centre console, so hence my feeling he'd be better off with a thwart. Even last week, Andrew who is a very experienced crew, tended to the scuppers rather than up on the side, you also forget it is slippery as hell, even if you're up there, it'll slide you down now and again. This week it's a proper SW wave fest, not like the N/E which produced a shorter chop, with wind over tide and cross waves lifting the port stern quarter and going for a surf would only have taken us down tide below the mark, it was a bit of a tricky leg. a Spinnaker might have given us more to bite against, but not, we tried one rounding going high and fast to see if we could play the angles but that didn't work, we lost ground, soaking was the only way. Never been in a two hander that felt so much like a single hander, off wind death rolling, but not quite, before. Edited by iGRF - 03 Aug 14 at 9:44pm |

I think the 'knees' bit might have been related to praying ....
Sounds like you did NOT capsize though .. perhaps something was paying attention amongst your deities. More likely you found that Icon is rather forgiving after all is said and done and you really have to c**k it up really badly to wash the burgee. The slippy bit still seems a problem though - and needs to be sorted - clothing or boat or both. It simply should not be like that .... and the slot sealer sounds like a 'demo boat' one to me so easily sorted. Rolling ? Possibly you are over reacting and getting out of sequence ... it will look after you a bit more if you do not 'help' too much ! Thwarts ? Always available if you insist .... and we even stock them here. Basic transitions ? Get them right and familiar first and all the complex stuff is that much easier. A bit of coaching and/or simply more time on the water. Keep at it and good luck. Mike L. |

Am I the only one who finds it somewhat bizarre that the Commodore of a sailing club seems to do his best to deter people from going there? He constantly advertises how awful launching is, potential new members just won't bother.
