Why the new builder so soon? Thought the Devoti Icon was supposed to be the dogs gnadgers!

Although will Devoti still be building Icons when the mystical new builder gets announced?

The best thing the Icon could do is re-name as the D-2

Still struggling to understand the marketing approach
Marke - And I don't understand your subject change now either. You presented the case of a single Icon as indicative of what precisely ? And if not of anything relevent what was your purpose ? You must have known it had the potential to mislead with a sample size of ONE yet where was any real the statistical 'health warning' ? If you crunch numbers professionally then I would suggest you very well understood what you were doing. In other words do you still think it was a balanced point that you made ? But moving on ... as we must. You ask about 'marketing' now - what on earth has that got to do with your presentation of partially processed numbers as fact ? Or are you now implying that Icon owners and others interested commercially in the boat simply don't pose awkward questions in case it damages sales ? Well we have no problem with anyone suggesting that Icon is pretty fast and in fact it does raise profile ..... However if you think we are going to 'knuckle down' and not raise legitimate concerns then you are likely to be proved wrong. Other 'new' classes will soon be subject to the same process and are likely to be far far more vocal on the subject ! All they and we want is fair handicap numbers that reflects average performance in average boats with average crews... Good ....Yes or No ? Now why not simply borrow an Icon yourself - risk reputation as we do constantly and 'have a go' yourself ! What you go to lose ? I'm sure the rather able Icon helm Paul Bartlett (for it is he at Starcross) will help out if you are local and if he cannot we or the CA will. None of us bite and who knows you might even like it. The Icon is a delightfully simple and rewarding boat to sail, whatever it's handicap. It can carry a wide range of crew sizes and is as good on a puddle as it is on the sea.
It is faster than a 200 and slower than a 400. But you can still get beaten over the water by a 200 and still beat a 400. |

I like Mike's marketing approach which says to me "try the boat, you might like it". And he appears to be generous with his time and use of boats. I think he is of the "under sell and over deliver" school of selling. No bad thing in my book. |

I really cannot understand this.....At my club we are Supernova lead, we have more of those than anything else. We then have Lightning, Byte, Phantom, GP, all these boats sail regularly. Some people moan, particularly one of the Phantom sailors who is now sailing off 1002 but the old PY flattered him.
No one complains when one particular sailor wins because he has proved how good he is. We all know where we are in the great scheme of club racing. We have 5 pursuit races every year for which we use personal handicaps calculated from results on our own water. So 5 times a year we all get a chance and the results vary wildly unlike everyday sailing. The only person to complain is the constantly winning sailor who feels he has little chance of winning....but he still tries. |He cannot really complain because the 'computer never lies'. It's only club racing (that thing you do before the pub) after all. If you are looking for 'fair' buy a road base. |

It is and they are. Some clubs are very good at welcoming new members. The average club racing boat is beer money. You don't even have to own a boat to sail and join in. Quite what this has to do with the Icon handicap, I'm not sure. |

Err ... your argument seems to be if you cant sail a boat to its PY then they PY is wrong ... I am just pointing out that maybe ... just maybe it is the sailor who is below average in this case.

I am well aware of statistics - basically make my living doing some quite complex statistical algorithms. At no point did I say the Starcross icon should be the reference point for the national class EN. I simply said that at Starcross sailing against equally good sailors from other classes and applying a crew skill factor adjustment tried and tested over ten years that 969 doesn't look to be wildly out of whack. It was a response from the lack of data from anywhere else - apart from the odd anecdotal evidence. Tom has just given another data point so make sure that gets in to the PYS to balance ours. Still struggling to understand the marketing approach. |
