Hmm I don't think it's anything to do with the line, we're asking it to bend at right angles over an open tube end quite sharp with no cap or wheel or just a return would do it, it works eventually but there is a world of subtle use for it upwind as I'm sure you're aware, obviously on sea courses we spend a bit more time settled on a given tack so adjusting the leech tension and twist which this device affords, would work better with a smoother exit for the line out of the end of the pole. And whilst I'm being picky, that top batten I haven't had a look yet but if I find contract crap up there on an allegedly premium sail from North... In light wind it is the very devil to transition.. It looks dodgy on that picture reversed like ours kept doing. |

I seem to remember putting a plug with a hole in it in my mop handle one years ago and in a 'flying pole' I made for a Javelin. I bought them from my local tool suppliers (any size to order) and drilled my own hole!

Oh GRF, GRF, GRF am I glad I don't sell you anything - 1. Batten tension - top batten needs a reasonable tension and when you pop it over just use a tug on the cunnigham to pop it over. The sail was great on my boat and I am sure it was standard! 2. Pole set up looks basic, but works well, needs a few minor tweeks, but not blocks or anyting. Maybe that one isn't set up right. (certainly you need a bit of shock cord at the outer end to keep the jib tack tight to the pole. I could race the boat single handed and had no problems with the systems. Just go sailing and it all comes right in the end ........ chilllll my man

In this case it's the plug in the boat that is causing the problem!!!!

Hi Greame
1) Look at that photo again carefully .... It is in fact a rather good sail but is not like the standard NORTH fitted on the boat you have on loan (look beyond the North jib !). We switched to North as default for other reasons, but nothing to do with battens, 'contract' or otherwise. It blades off a tad earlier than the North if you want to set it up to do so but both are intended to do it .... as for battens why not simply check the supplied North sail ... and let us know what you find ;-) 2) Dangly pole - 'inboard' end should have a turned acetal fitting in place that significantly reduces line friction. We tried some with sheaves in the development programme but they offered no real advantage and simply pushed up the necessary diameter of the dangly tube - but the sheave alternatives were less fussy about the line used hence my earlier comments about suitable line. FWIW the default dangly presumably supplied wit the boat is also tapered and of relatively low diameter compared to anything else available. Nothing but the best ..... Mike L. The sail when set is actually very good, even Contender man (pickier than me) complemented us on the way it set, and so does the jib, we all very much like the boat, if Trev likes it when he gets back we may have to enter negotiation mode.
Having said that it hasn't yet gone out in the full teeth of a sou'wester that will be final proof, I'm already getting other members suggesting we get it as a club boat. (like that's going to happen after what the muppets do to those Visions) but we do have lots of man wife, boy girl combo's that it would be ideal for and the fact it's in there pitching in the fleet with the Merlin, the Hornet, the 500's at ball park PY (even though it's wrong) at 979 (the Gt Lakes figure) and the Merlin at 973 we'd have a fair battle, we'd just have the Merlin boys whining like girls if ever they had to admit their guilt. ![]() |

Blimey ! We were hardly expecting that ..... 'almost' a qualified approval from GRF. (Think I'd better go for a lie-down quickly)
The handicap numbers will sort themselves out in time - albeit the GL ones will 'zero in' to a true number much more quickly than the simplistic (arthritic ?) official PN system - (Yes - we know and the pun is fully intended as well)..... btw - The new builder is going to produce Icon for one of their key overseas target markets in 'hardened' format alongside the regular version we will see here in a few months time. This 'bullet proof' version will not be significantly heavier but will be intended to take a lot more 'everyday' abuse from crews who may not quite treat boats with the same care and respect direct purchaser/ owners might here in the UK ! .... like hauling them directly up the beach or onto pontoons (Yes - we've seen it done with our own eyes). The other changes they are introducing include jib cleats as standard on the central 'spine' each side and a number of other ergonomic and aesthetic changes they have identified as necessary/desirable... more details next month. First time in for a while... I probably shouldn't rise to this but please can I clear something up as it seems some personal beliefs are being passed off as fact... The Great Lakes team (from QM, Rutland, Grafham, Northampton, Yorkshsire Dales and Draycote) run their numbers through the RYA's PYS website (they have a login like an individual club which is filtered out from the national returns so as not to duplicate data) but they manually remove more of the slower performers from each race than the RYA algorithm is set to do automatically. They then look at the numbers and make further adjustments based on (some) guess work and knowledge/insight from running the original Winter Series races. I'm not sure if or how the results from other events now using the Great Lakes numbers will be integrated in to their data. The RYA numbers are based on the actual numbers that clubs return. The PYAG do not add the finger in the air part to the calculation for the national numbers. Hence why we may be slightly behind but it is not true that the national system is any more simplistic than the Great Lakes numbers. I agree with Mike on one thing though, the number for the Icon will probably rise when more results come in but it should be remembered it is an EN number and was correct based on the data we had in front of us at the time of our meeting. It's no secret that En's are based on lower amounts of data, but we publish numbers that the group believes might be useful to clubs using the PY system (after all it is run for clubs not classes or individuals). The pre-amble at the top of the PY list states "Experimental numbers are based on fewer returns and are to be used as a guide for clubs to allocate a starting number for either new or development classes. Any number issued by a club should be reviewed and adjusted where necessary at the clubs discretion. The list of experimental Portsmouth Numbers will be periodically reviewed by the RYA and is based on data received from the PY Online website (www.pys.org.uk)." If clubs tell us the EN's are of no use we could look to stop publishing them which just means there would be more of a wait for new classes to appear on the national list. If Mike fancies sending a demo boat to Draycote I'm sure we can get some more data in to the PYS for the Icon. Anyway back in to the ether I'll scurry. TTFN. Edited by chrisg - 28 Jul 14 at 9:54pm |
