Current results from a very light Abersoch...
We do blame the handicap of course ! ....(and I do not just mean Icons 969 EN !) Anyway Mike and Charlotte are under very strict instructions NOT to drive the EN the 'wrong way' ... They were of course rather easily 'beaten' in Race 1 as well ... not too surprising since Mike was not even there - he was working at / travelling from the British Open Golf event at the time ![]() Edited by blaze720 - 23 Jul 14 at 2:10pm |

Sounds like you should borrow an Icon for that week then ! Give me a call .... Mike L. PS - We very sensibly make sure the crew cannot 'lose' our sticks by making sure it is tied on (so many throw them over the side otherwise ) The official excuse it that they are 'more efficient' ...it also prevents crew related trouble ... you don't want them armed as well do you ?. Seriously - a dangle is a must really - I cannot imagine exactly what the Tasar has against them or is it another 'not invented here' problem ? Edited by blaze720 - 23 Jul 14 at 2:00pm |

Tasar Vs Icon
iiitick
The tasar is not allowed a dangly pole , however the existing jib stick can be cross cleated from the windward jib car to the jib clew which provides the same degree of control as the dangly pole offers.
the boat is exceptionally sensitive to being sailed bolt upright, pobably more than a phantom, hence the essentail use of the traveller
Ther are 5 confirmed Tasars at Federation week at Hyling Island in August. We have two spare competitive tasars available for use if anbody wishes to try one
Regards
Rod

I couldn't believe that when he told me this morning, it is a bloody small world, what are the chances of that? He should know about stuff, he's working for the master of all marine knowledge.. ![]() ![]() Dinghy Sailors + Engines = Disaster waiting to happen. |

Has the Icon come up against the all conqueroring Albacore yet when racing? In theory it should stuff it, so interested in how the reality goes?

I suspect the nice young man we saw in Folkestone might actually be grumpf's next victim, the world down there bring as small as it is. He seemed quite knowledgeable. Let's hope so. It seemed to me that getting the slot right was crucial.

This should be, Tasar v. Icon !!
Perhaps the trouble with Tasar, on a lake at least, is their sensitivity to adjustment. Frank Bethwaite said that the wake should be 'fine grained' and that the stern wave should start at the rudder. If it spreads from the corners of the chines then you are too far back or from one chine it is not flat. Not to mention sheeting the traveler to windward, no twin cars here, adjusting the jib slot on sliding fairleads, spannering the mast and remembering to pull back the shrouds at the gybe mark. As well as all this the crew has the minor controls, kicker, outhal and cunningham. What fun! What shouting. The crew however can gain revenge by hitting the helm with the jib stick when retrieving...... Are Tasar's allowed flying sticks yet?

And we hope you get a bit of breeze ... if you do I think you will find the acceleration interesting. The other common impression is how 'easy', quiet and dry Icon is and how low the sheet loadings are. Its speed is difficult to judge as a result if you are more used to one of the 'splashy' classes ... so just find something else nearby to sail near and see how it compares ! Should not be too much of a problem at Abersoch this week. Mike and Charlotte (it is their boat I think you will be trying) I'm sure, will give you a few general hints and guide you on the dangly pole thing. Get that right on a reach in breeze feed the main with bit of controlled slot and hang on ! Let us know of course .... Mike L. |

Here at Abersoch there is both a Tasar and an Icon, but in the very light and shifting breeze anyone who thinks that the results are indicative is in for a shock. Have to say that watching the sailing with interes,t that both boats have looked impressive. If all goes to plan and the wind arrives, I'll be sailing the Icon on Thursday.
What is even more interesting is that for the rest of the time I've been sailing an experimental Merlin Rocket. A stunning boat, but one that just stops dead with any weight in the back. As the new breed of boats go through the stages of development where they can start to challenge the existing designs, there is a real risk that you'll need an even lighter helm at the back. Could this be the chance that Igrf has been waiting for...................... |
