Well it eventually showed up after the M25 had had its wicked way with Wing Wang & Er Indoors as they death glared a path to our door they had some other bits for a Redoubt guy which we duly unwrapped and got them on their way as soon as, they had more still to do which was a bit of a shame as Wing Wang might have proved useful pointing out how to put the bits together.

But eventually I got the covers off and the mast up, there's this funny pole thing dangling by the side of the mast on elastic, that I have no idea what to do with, but luckily i have a stand in who does for thursday (Trevs Away), a new chap ex Chipstead reckons he knows what it's for.

There are Barbara things on the floor that Wing Wang told me what to do with but I've naturally immediately forgotten, allegedly they're to do with the jib so more unexplored territory.

Other than that it still looks as I remember, nice, simple and uncluttered, I've parked it right next to the Merlin, on thursday it'll be round one.

A few years ago when we where trying harder with our Tasar I always thought that RTC racing on a pond we could hold a well sailed Supernova.That 'fast as a 300' comment I made was just when conditions were right.

The point of not having a kite on a Tasar was to make a boat with a rig uncompromised by the need to have one just get on and sail it!

Thwarts and cleats .....

There will be another licenced Icon builder announced very shortly (Full release info in August) .... they are keeping to the core Icon script  (very important of course) but want to put their own 'mark' on the boat in a number of ways and are already working on a new deck plug and tooling.

They believe the changes they have identified are important and their requests / suggestions are now fully agreed.    As part of this review process we have fully briefed them about the thwart option(s) .... It will not be fitted as standard as now but it will be offered with their Icon from Day One.

Jib cleating ?  Well the central spine is being modified anyway for other reasons and we/they are taking the opportunity to tailor- in a pair of 'open' jib sheet cleats in the optimal position.   I will fit a pair on my next Icon  ... but I suspect 'Andy' (Dancing farmer) will scoff and think we've gone 'southern softie' (Yes - we have on this one and in a couple of other areas - bet you use them occasionally ...if only between races eh Wink  ....) 

Several exisiting Icons have been adapted to carry jib cleats anyway so despite Andy's anticipated scoffing there is demand for them .... the retrofitted ones work but 'built-in' will not only look more elegent they should work better as well.

BTW - You can have ANY sheeting system you like on the main - it is intentionally not a tightly controlled part of the Icon rules.  Some love 'off the boom' (I do myself) but we do accept that others want something more traditonal or familiar ....

Nowhere, cleating the jib is also awkward so he will have to hang on to the jib sheets, not a bad thing, at least he will still be attached to the boat.

Oh no! An excuse to chuck himself out. he'll get right on that, they might as well fit a diving board, nothing he likes more than a trip into the sail even when I tell him not to. If it's not that it's pinochio-ing down the side for a little swing round the shrouds and back at least he won't be able to do that to alleviate the boredom.

Any other useful crew deviations I should be aware of, where can he put his coffee, cake and newspaper?

I never actually sailed it against our resident Merlin (his crew has just had a baby) but I did manage to keep up with Fireballs and Phantoms quite easily so whilst 969 might be a tad on the quick side I would not expect it to get much slower once results start churning through.

One thing I did really like was sheeting off the boom. Felt a bit strange at first but definitely more feel than going through the block on the floor.

Oh and do tell the crew to make sure they get the toe straps each time, my crew fell out the other Sunday having missed the straps.

So it's your fault it's got 969 Scotsfin, is that what you're saying?

And don't they all tell me it's the sailors not the boat which creates the handicap?

Sounds like you need more like me sailing it.

They might sell another one.

GRF it takes skill, practice and experise to sail off 969, which of course I managed to do a few times Wink .... you however may well struggle. Don't always blame the boat, PY or RYA but look closer to home if don't immediately sail to the PY. Practice makes perfect ... too which you'll undoubtedly answer "I am perfect and therfore I need no practice" ..... but therein lies the flaw  LOL
