I wasn't suggesting that the inland /open water numbers are calculated for just the Phantom but all classes. Even if the overall "average" of both inland and open water remains the official PY at least the inland and open water numbers would give you a number to go to your sailing ctte with a start point for a local adjustment. I've been the only Phantom out at my club in 2013 believe there should be one more this year, but I can't see the sailing ctte taking up a suggestion from a single boat to adjust the PY, no way whatsoever of telling if any perceived problem is due to a now unrealistic PY for the waters or my dodgey sailing. I'm sure that's the case for many classes at many clubs, if there are sufficient numbers to lobby for a local change almost by definition you wouldn't need to as there would be class racing. Something similar to the new crusier system with a correction factor from results built in to it would be a good alternative, addition to inland and open water numbers.
I agree the Phantom is a great class and has a good circuit, but my job takes me abroad a lot. There is 1 event I'm in the UK for in the Southern travelers in 2014 so I have to make the best of handicap racing; separate numbers for inland and open water and or a system lke the new cruiser one with a built in compensation factor would seem likely to keep a lot more people racing on a more level playing field. On the subject of the new R three rigs will cause no end of confusion esp if people swap between them 9 on light days smaller on heavy ones - unless the sail size is very clearly marked on the sail, so its legible from race control some several hundred metres away in my clubs case how will a race officer know???

Over and over the Portsmouth Yardstick group have stated that they'd happily offer inland, estuary, etc PYs if they had enough data to go on.
In a ideal situation, they'd have the result of every handicap race in the country.

And will they really care? We have enough issues rationalising a protest for legitimate on the water infractions.... how many times have you heard folks say, I knew xxx hit the mark but I couldn't be arsed to protest.... I know its wrong, but I still would probably never protest anyone in any sailing I do, certainly not at club level, it's just not that important. Will any of us on here hand on heart say they'd 'raise an issue' with noticing Bob XXX used the big rig this week but he's normally on the 7... I wouldn't. Some of you might, and you'd be right for doing it. |

Surely they have enough data for at least some classes as there were several with several thousand results, to publish separate ones to give a steer to clubs with "non typical waters", even if the official one remains the from all the entries combined.

can't your club just use the recommended numbers churned out by the PY website if it's that much of an issue?

Is it my imagination but aren't RS re-creating the problems presented by the two (or perhaps three, depending on your point of view) sizes of RS100 rig? Unless they sell large numbers very quickly they are going to have the same arguments in the Aero Fleet as the 100s have.

don't assume that there are any 'arguments' going on in the 100 fleet, there's lot been insinuated here but not much actual controversy at the waters-edge, IMO

depends... I see a grand total of RS-Zer0 10.2s showed up of the Winters Getafix.... people voted with their feet? Not that it's had a positive effect of 8.4 numbers either....

Anyway, not relevant here on this thread- these are 3 separate classes from the outset, racing independently and one can assume, applying for ISAF status independently too in due course. Edited by yellowwelly - 10 Mar 14 at 5:24pm |

I can't see that they will get any more trouble than the Laser, Radial and 4.7 does - ie, some ROs will get it wrong/not be able to cope, but most will be fine, so long as people sign on correctly.
