Most classes will do test sails - it just will involve a bit of travelling to try all the ones you want to before you buy.

+1 for me too
And at our club' the moo' has wanted a go on a icon for ages. Just let us know when/where ... The CA /Cirrus are getting a couple of Icon demo boats organised for 2014 and we (Cirrurs) will be making a loan boat available soon as well. Over to you guys, call the CA/Cirrus or sort something at the Dinghy Show ... Can be with other boats and/or seperate. Mike L. |

True enough Jim, not to mention the insurance issues, randomness of uk weather etc. I just think it would be nearly impossible to make it a success. Shame really, I hate dragging my ass to London over a weekend...god knows I spend enough time on the M25 and M4 nowadays already!

Think about the logistics a bit more. Lets say each punter wants 20 minutes in a boat. Hard to get much of a feel for less. Given a half reasonable day for the poor sods manning the boats then that's , what, shall we say 25 people per boat. If your class can find two mugs willing to lend their boats out maybe 50. Then you need a spare boat so there's something to look at on shore. OK, so that's 3 boats times how many classes. There are about 100 classes in the current PY list. If we can get 2 boats for every class, and each punter tries 3 classes, then that's 1,500 - 2,000 paying punters. Not many to pay for renting temporary changing rooms, toilets etc, but far more than any club infrastructure could cope with. So 2,000 paying punters, each there for half a day, plus lets say 3 boat owners and one other helper per class, lets say 1,000 paying customers and 400 class reps on site at any time,
that's an awful lot more parking spaces than any club I can think of has... I'm not saying its impossible, but it sure makes Sailboat look easy to organise by comparison... |

Brilliant idea in principle but no class could afford it after the stupid prices charged to display at the dinghy show!

Mongrel
It will never happen as it is: A) far too sensible for RYA toffs to consider, and B) much too far from London for them to venture out. Damm good idea though - much better than the old TV studios. |

If you want to go a bit more into the Midlands I am sure it could be arranged at Bartley SC on a Sunday.

Like some other things - sailing is more enjoyable when you do it with someone else

Go away with those ridiculously sensible suggestions Mongrel- this is dinghy sailing ;-)
(The dinghy exhibition is for grandparents- weighing up the needs of the Grandkids vs. a nice new Solo/GP14/Miracle... Edited by yellowwelly - 12 Feb 14 at 6:36pm |
