Having anything to do with horses in many ways is very much like sailing. Only MUCH MUCH more so if you love them/it you'll never notice or remember the ludicrous cost of related equipment, time spent phaffing on, days wasted because it went lame the night before / to much or not enough wind. But those Red Letter days when everything went as sweet as sweet and the balance was like a ballerina will live in the mind forever and keep you coming back so long as your spirit of optimism survives.

My helm and OH misses his riding at this time of year, when they'd be galloping hopelessly around the West Somerset countryside while the foxes were up to their evasive tricks, but he always reckons horse time is 59 minutes hard work and 1 minute riding. And you have the commitment of having to attend to them every day without fail and he doesn't miss the 5a.m. starts or the kit-spending ex wife!
At least with boats you can sail for far more of that hour, even with a wooden vintage boat! And you can leave them alone when the weather is bad or you just don't feel like sailing.
Has anyone noticed that tomorrow is officially "Blue Monday", the most depressing day of the year?
So enjoy today's sailing high. Edited by patj - 19 Jan 14 at 7:49am |

I suspect the motorbike was safer. Apparently you are more likely to be injured in a horse related accident than a motorbike. I never really got into bikes but have a horsehoe shaped scar to remind me of my riding days. Boats are much much safer option. Edited by rogerd - 18 Jan 14 at 9:13pm |

the sNAG in the plan is what to do with the girls... anyway, I'm not bitter about the horses. It makes a lot more sense to do country sports around here than it does to use a beach toy.

Too true - if my wife's horse had been a boat/car etc it would have been written off long ago. Trouble is, they get so attached to the things...

Ha! Under the thumb James! Best thing I ever did was get my wife a horse. Free to go sailing whenever I like now. I made it VERY clear from the start that I wouldn't be doing any of the shovelling, not unless she helped me pack up the boat whenever I did an open.

many moons ago I had a wife with a horse affliction, and by way of compensation, I was allowed to try my hand at motorcycle racing. this is not a cheap sport, as you might imagine, but even so I was unable to match the prodigious spend on vets' fees and various equine paraphernalia.

well we've only got the one horse at the moment- another pony is probably imminent this spring for my eldest (5 y.o.) and the youngest just loves being around the stables and lead reign walks.... so not looking good; but if that's their thing then I'll find the time and money to make it happen- as best I can anyway and if that means sailing old windsurf kit once in a blue moon and not drifting around in a 10-20k dinghy at the duck pond every week... well so be it, they're well worth it.

+1 to that, one nag cost me enough, but plural? Apply the inverse square law to your finances. I had a chum, quite well off until he had to put his horse through college.. Edited by iGRF - 18 Jan 14 at 1:51pm |
