That was one of the great rule evasions of all time: for those who don't know the event was pre *International* Canoe and Uffa built two boats that measured to both US and UK rules. The US rules mandated two masts (hence the two ketch rigged US boats) and, I think, no standing rigging, so Uffa rigged the second "mast" as a rigid forestay with a jib on it.


Interesting how this idea has surfaced again in the Access Dinghy!

Yes it is. Interesting that it was an Olympic Boat in 1920  and 1928

Perhaps almost more interesting is the event format where there were qualifiers for a ten boat 4 race final which was scored as follows....

"NB: Final positions were determined by counting the number of first, second, third, fourth etc. places obtained by each contestant in all of the races. Consequently Belgium finished in ninth place, despite not having qualified for the 'finals', thanks to having finished second in the first race in group 2. "
