Most of this drinking culture, or is it culture of drinking goes over my head. I do drink cider but it costs a quid a bottle from Morrisons. I don't like it but it is the cheapest way of softening the sharp edges of life, particularly with Christmas coming. My son-in-law-in-waiting will be here for the festivities and he is MD of a foreign supermarket chain. He will supply the wine for lunch and I will treat it with due respect, but in truth it matters little to me.

![]() Just like sailing, then - 1.5 Euro a bottle cider gets you labeled as posh, just as a £500 boat does! It is all in the perception... |

Okay, enuff from the westerners... Anyone tried Adnams's Gin, lovely with fevertree, and a particularly posh mothers ruin in a bubbly bath. Serve with lime, not lemon.

I sometimes think its a mistake to acquire an educated palate when it comes to too many things... I'm quite happy to be content with Gold blend rather than "real" coffee and instant mash is OK provided you think of it as a foodstuff of its own rather than a substitute for real potato (oh, and add some seasoning, a bit of butter or reasonable marge and a little bit of powdered garlic and maybe just a soupcon of cayenned pepper if your tastes lie that way...) There are limits though, and consuming McMorons burgers or keg beer are definitely beyond them... Edited by JimC - 23 Dec 13 at 11:29am |

Try the dry stuff from Burrow Hill then, rips your throat out
Anyway you've got to love this thread. Moved onto the classy works of cider. Perhaps that is the new posh? |

There is no hope for any one who prefers the ersatz produced in Normandy to the real thing! However, if you have been used to commercial British ciders (which are very sweet (even the dry ones) your palate is not yet ready for "cidre brut". You would have to start on the "cidre doux" which to meis sickly sweet.
A bit like those brought up on keg beer have to learn to appreciate the real stuff! |

Ha just worked out the difference between posh & not now. You have several bottles of a swanky sounding cider, I have a gallon of the stuff in a plastic container...... |

Last time I had any cider from Brittany it nearly stripped the enamel off of my teeth. Normandy is ok, Brittany no. The only thing any of them can do is Calvados. You should try the stuff from our local farms, especially Burrow Hill (who also make cider brandy as well). Won many competitions too that involved the whole of Britain and France.
