My father in law was a man from East End stock who saw great deprivation caused by the demon drink. Because of this he up sticked his family, moved to Hertfordshire and never drank. He was a man of honour but very lacking in humor and levity. Consequently I found his company somewhat trying and did my best to avoid the miserable old sod. Upon retirement he and his wife moved to Somerset in order to be close to his older daughter and their grandchildren. Enjoying his new sunny location he decided to act like a local and drink a little cider with his meals. His working class credentials should have encouraged him to drink scrumpy but since he considered himself to be a man of taste his tipple turned out to be Champagne cider which unknown to him has considerable percentage. Those few short years were happy ones for him, his wife, family and even me for twenty minutes every Christmas. Alas it was not to last as my mother in law died and he married a woman with Scottish connections who whisked him off to Carnoustie where he developed sympathies for the Scottish National Party and attempted to drink single malt. It was not to his taste however and he re established his original character dying a miserable man some twenty five years ago.

Merry Christmas

La Sidreria in Valencia has some pretty special Jamon Iberico - acorn fed stuff, nom nom

serves apple grog to accompany, although I prefer the Rioja

Scrumpy is for natives of Devon and Somerset who wish they were Cornish and thus in the queue for independence.

Non-posh drink Bulmers, Strongbow and other sweet fizzy vaguely apple flavoured drinks, preferably in an ice-filled glass.

Posh people drink "cidre bouché" that they buy on holiday in Britanny or (a pale substitute) Normandy, or "a delightful artisan cider produced at an orchard not far from our little place in the country"

Cider isn't posh?

I thought posh people drank cider, whilst drunken bums drank scrumpy. It may, of course, depend upon how far up the social scale one thinks posh begins...

Forget the scone or scon or cream them jam debate..try the proper west Country invention, cider, and get so bladdered you won't give a toss about about stupid stale cakes with white muck on them. I don't think that's posh
Everything I say is my opinion, honest

As for the west country debate, this might be of interest.

cream teas etiquette

I'm pretty sure scones with cream & jam is better described as a 'cream tea' and 'afternoon tea' tends to feature slices of cake, small fancies and little slices of sandwiches, with the crusts cut off, of course, least it does at the Ritz and Langhams, which of course is where I like to take tea being a sailor and all (or I know someone who actually studied this stuff for their hotcats degree)

Used to be a fab cream tea place on the road up from the seal sanctuary in Gweek, you could sit in the back garden and when the kids were really young, they would make them jam & cream sarnies so we could all enjoy the good stuff, nice pot of tea too

Jam first. Then you can put a huge dollop of cream on.  If you do the huge dollop of cream first then the jam slides off which can be rather embarrassing.

What could possibly go wrong?
