Very true James, the end would be in sight if I gave in to the attractions of sailing a Solo ;)
I guess I'm an oddball, sailing became my life outside of work during my 20s, even though I bought a house. Life as an RS circuit waller ensued in a sad and desperate attempt to cling onto studentesque socials and drinking. During that time I easily had enough disposable income to support life on the circuit and a 95% mortgage. In my 30s I've settled down accepting that I neither have the finances nor the energy to carry on campaigning on the circuit but am incredibly happy with sailing more at my club. I support my family on a single wage as my wife is a housewife (joint decision) and have all the wonderful expense that comes with having a 3yr old and a soon to be 6yr old. But, I still make the time to compete in every race I can at our club, and have invested in a 2nd boat to sail with the kids. For me its my main hobby and I count many of the members of my club as my best mates and great family friends. The big message here is that I'm dedicated to my sport/hobby, something I'm not convinced others are. Nessa, I fully understand your points. We had an interesting discussion at out club last week, and one thought was that routine played a big part. If you can get people into a routine of turning up at 10am every Sunday, then its easier to hold on to them. I wonder whether this is something that works against tidal clubs who dont sail at regular times? As for notable members, we are a diverse bunch from students to squaddies, engineers, plumbers, sparkies but we do have Mark Horton the BBC Coast presenter, and he sounds posh! I think he's a little bit further up the pecking order mate...
never fear though, we all but toil with the tools society gave us... and proud are we for whatever we can achieve from the efforts of our labour wielding them. Edited by yellowwelly - 11 Dec 13 at 11:59pm |

Ah ha! again, Colonel, Captain and Major, Commissioned Officers. No sqaddies, Corporals or other NCO's. See, posh. Colodore by the way.
We do have Sargesail on here, is he of NCO gender? He can be on my side.

Yes it is very hard for the 20 - 40 age group. They have houses to buy, careers to start and families to consider. The good thing about having children in their mid twenties as I do is that they are ripe for exploitation. They owe me for their conception and upbringing and I never cease to remind them of the fact.
Our best new members are returners with money. Has anyone got a titled member? Sorry I mean a member with a title, oh, an aristocrat in the club?

FWIW It gets less of an issue at 30 as opposed to 23... By that age you realise sailing is never going to be the week in/week out lash up of youth and uni sailing... Sure there's the opportunity for a pint or two, but you're there for the sailing and do your main socialising elsewhere.

Craiggo, at the moment our racing numbers are excellent, but I think central to all of this is that the club has made a real effort to offer something to the whole family. We have women's sessions, we have loads of kids stuff, we have family sessions. Members rarely turn up and find they have no one to talk to and I think that more than anything has helped make the club the success it currently is. I think the fact that quality family time can be achieved out on the water is absolutely crucial in this day and age.
It is not a posh club, though our proximity to Cambridge means we have more than our fair share of geeks and boffins.
