This post began sensibly. It was a sensible and relevant question. Sailing is, in my opinion, regarded as 'posh'. This image excludes large swathes of the population, particularly youth. The resulting 'humor' proves my point.

I was outlining my own history but I have given it up as inappropriate. Suffice it to say that I was taught to have imagination as child. Imagination overcomes prejudice both real or imagined.

This post (if you mean the thread) didn't start sensibly, it started with an American top 15 of posh sports, a list about as relevant to the UK as peanut butter and jelly sandwiches in a brown paper bag for lunch.

My view is this is less about being posh, but more about barriers to entry.  Like it or not, to go sailing you need equipment (whether it be begged, borrowed or bought) and a means of transport.  To play football you can start with a £5 ball from Sports Direct* and a couple of jumpers and a couple of mates on the street.

* I am in no way connected with Sports Direct and I am not paid to endorse their products.

The Girls gave it to me, me? I'm Grammar School clawed everything he owns from aspiration and on the way up did indeed associate with lower level 'posh' folk. I liked the way they spoke, their good manners and for a back street knife fighting gutter urchin, it looked better than what I had, so I tried to emulate the way they speak although with not too much of an edge. So I have nothing against posh, folk need something to aspire to.

Dinghy sailors however I wouldn't consider Posh, Five oh sailors maybe GP14ers certainly not, Finboys all land owners with PA's last I looked, who even cares?

POSH in itself isn't enough of a classification unless you consider the whole class structure from lower middle thru aristocrats of which there are still plenty, not many of them sail Dinghies, Prince Charles however is a windsurfer, I even have a letter from him somewhere congratulating us for something or other, does that make windsurfers posh?

Well back from the Mechanics Institute and AGM. Jolly affair, pub/meeting/pub. So there we are discussing weighty topics with a line dancing club going on up stairs. sh*t those Mechanics are heavy footed.

What transpired is that we have 22 club boats, all sailable, no joining fee, and very reasonable subscriptions. We also provide training. What is there to stop people?

Are we perceived as to posh?
