The reason it has been running so long is because, Rupert (and with a name like that we all know where you came from, unless they put worms in your spaghetti hoops at school,) it has touched a sensitive nerve. All you affluent coves (is that a word you use in your society, Bertie Wooster did) are desperate to proclaim your superiority  without letting it show. Worry not! As a carbuncled son of toil I am not offended, and, in true northern working class tradition we have our AGM tonight in the Mechanics Institute Whaley Bridge. Posh?

Mechanics Institute - a reminder that the Industrial Revolution was lead by craftsmen, having benefitted from apprenticeships and self-education. not by the university educated and the beneficiaries of inherited wealth and priviledge.

Unfortunately the posh, having demonstrated their gross incompetence by wrecking British industry got their revenge in the great British Counter-Revolution which started in 1979!

I've come to believe that the greater the emphasis on amateur sailing (and especially if the word corinthian is involved), then the further "up" the social scale the club is positioned.

I'm not sure it is possible to become posh ... it is defined at birth ...

One can learn to enunciate clearly, work hard in the free education our society provides and thus access a higher educational level than many a generation of working folk could never have hoped for in decades past.

The same as yo bitches can get down wiv der kids innit, by simply slipping your lexicon into something frankly ridiculous outside of downtown LA.

All it takes is to roll up with some new sexy vernacular, a Camelot grant for hardware and the RYA can gift wrap yachting as a new accessible sport for the masses called 'sailing'.

Social mobility needn't be precluded by a glottal stop.  Never underestimate the power of language... or sartorial elegance, to define social standing.

That was the case, and Britain can be proud of having once acheived a high degree of social mobility. Alas, one has to use the past tense as the closing of the grammar schools (the wrong solution to the wrong question), huge student fees and the development of private schools geared not to education but to exam results has allowed the affluent to pull up the drawbridge and keep the oiks out.

Sailing is suffering as a result. Arguably sailing was far more accessible when we all sailed in Mirrors, Ents, GPs etc
