It is Latin.   I preferred using this after concluding a proof.

The ironic things is that the Romans were pretty crap at math's. Why not use a Greek phrase - they practically invented the subject (as we know it in the west)?

Boatshed - merci for the correction - however it is a piece of Latin that we learnt and only ever used in Maths, class - as you say at the end of a proof.

The Greeks were good at some forms of maths - geometry in particular.

As it's name indicates algebra is definetely not Greek.

One could say that modern maths started with the invention of the the zero. Again, not the Greeks.

Listen to yourselves, digging holes to fall into.  Perhaps we should never have touched on this subject as it has exposed so much prejudiced within our ranks. Was there a correspondent younger than 40 for instance? My father, a man of considerable wisdom, told me in my youth, in the mine, Honi Soit Qui Mal Y Pense which he said means, "It'll never get well if you pick it". He was also a liar so I don't place much faith in the Latin but I do in the sentiment.

To be honest, this forum's getting to be as dull as PY racing itself.

What's needed is a good SailJuice controversy, perhaps a Fireball at the Datchet Flyer with lots of 5s on the sail, a personality helming, rumours of out of class sails, that sort of thing.....

Neither Maths nor Latin float my boat, but I do like words.

I like forum threads that go round in meaningless circles, too, and I have been enjoying this one. I'm amazed how long it has been running for.

Do you think there is a tread on a differnt website concerning "Killing your stepmother Muffy so she doesn't see a f**king dime of Daddy's estate" where they cannot believe that this is a posh thing to do?
