	As I have proved in these pages sailing has a justifiably 'posh' image. This image is bolstered by the misconception of it as an expensive sport. For you chaps with your glamorous new boats it may be but for us oiks at the bottom of the pit it certainly is not. I wallow in the primeval slime catching the overspill from the rich mans table for which I am humbly grateful.

	Have you seen how much it costs to rent a dinghy? 1st one that came up on google was in cornwall, costing £60 for a Laser or Pico for the day, and £90 for a Wayfarer. So, say you want to do 5 weekends in a year (doesn't seem unreasonable) that would be £900 for a family boat. Then look at 2nd hand prices and you'll see you can buy a boat and insure it for less than that, and not a clunker, either. But when it comes down to it, neither option is particularly cheap nor accessible, so both will appeal to people with a bit of extra disposible income and adventuressness, if there is such a spelling...

	Correction: Owning a dinghy is the costly part - a very middle class obsession with ownership. Crewing, or sailing in rented boats, is not a costly sport. The counter argument - the "working class" boaters don't sail - their messing about in boats is more likely to take the form of sea angling. "working class" is a somewhat dated term I would agree - I am old enough to remeber when such a concept was a reality.

	I think "crew" is the american term for rowing in crewed boats (ie. not single sculls). Odd squash is ahead of dressage. Dinghy sailing is fairly non-posh but about as middle class as skiing due to cost.

	At my club's Autumn series in the A Handicap there were 21 entries and one qualifier, in the lasers there were 34 entires and 2 qualifiers and in the Solos there were 19 entries and 3 qualifiers. http://www.chewvalleysailing.org.uk/files/results/autumnpointspm2013.html Whilst taking nothing away from those that put the time and effort in to win, it can't be the best or most efficient way to run things when so few are actually 'competing'. Perhaps best left to a new topic though.

	What is another daft problem with small clubs is the award of trophies. I won a trophy (to my disgust) for being 1st in the silver fleet in two trophy races, just because there was only a beginner competing against me. We also have a number of GP 14 trophies dating from the glory days of GP racing at our club. At best we only have 3 GP's racing these days. Hollow victory? The 'boy' won all the Wednesday nights but did not bother much with Sundays. The junior won the junior trophy and the only consistent lady helm won the ladies trophy.....I don't mind that though because I made the trophy and I am profoundly (and hopelessly) in love with her. In reality the only significant trophy is the newly created Supernova one. The 'boy' and I even created achievement award certificates so everybody got some thing. I may sound cynical but it is so nice and British really. Dads Army Rules.

	Our dinner dance has been pushed back into January for some reason, and will be at a golf club, but then it has never been the poshest of do's - the tables of badly behaved pensioners ensure that!

	Our 'do' was in a golf club on top of a mountain this year rather than the oldest hotel in England (The Old Hall in Buxton) where it usually is. I would not waste my sartorial elegance on a golf club, so lounge suit for me this year in protest. I did not drag myself up the social ladder and join an evidently posh sailing club to eat in a .....golf club.
