Am I missing something here? Does the RS400 feel threatened by the Icon or something. The constant negativity from that quarter is getting very wearing. If there is a personal issue here or something? The name Jonah springs to mind.

Eh? Do boats sell virally? We aint going to buy ours until we try it, trying it involves travel, had there been a local dealer the deal would have been done ages ago, as it is, we bumble along, that's why boats don't sell, no market structure. If there were a network of say 100 dealers, then the job would just be to convince them, not some woolly hatted, weird beard, sandal wearing class halfwit.. Edited by iGRF - 30 Oct 13 at 1:36pm |

Good point, but, It's not just the 'volunteer management' in a CA that adds value, it is the ordinary sailing members. Half the point of owning a racing dinghy is to race against other people. That is a two way street. We all add something to the whole, and all benefit. The £20 (or £39 for RS) is not the issue, it is x-hundred man hours that others are putting in racing against you!

At the risk of going horribly off topic...
There has been interesting research into how much people would spend on a holiday if they could have no memeory of it. The vast majority of people would not value such a holiday as highly as one they could remeber (therefore they would not be prepared to pay as much). A large part of the value of a holiday is therefore in your camera. This indicates that cameras, which are cheap, are undervalued and holidays (by themselves) are over valued. I think the same is true of boats. As a standalone toy most people would not value most boats at anywhere near what they actually cost to buy new. Th reason they can justify the cost is because of the extra value the Class Association adds. CA membership is about £20 but adds about £5000 to the value of most boats. As most CAs are voluntary, I am not sure that it is a sustainable model for builders to make a living off of volunteers backs. Until boats can be built for what they are actually worth in their own right, introducing a new design will always be a difficult, but wothwhile, pursuit. |

The reason why dinghies are probably the most stilted backward market there is in luxury consumer goods is the value that people place on having a similar boat to the next guy. With the massive reductions in fleet sizes at opens and nationals this is particularly pertinent, seeing as achieving critical mass for a new class at club level is pretty much impossible without some massive investment or predetermined requirement and buyin from syndicates.

Icon has been around long enough now to show it's not going viral. I suspect some people buy them precisely because they are not part of a fleet, they don't want boat-on-boat racing. I can understand this to some extent, I bought a motorbike that was different to all my friends bikes, but then I have no pretense to racing that. The D1 is a different scenario altogether, the clear way ahead seems to be plenty of people want a singlehander with a kite but don't want a trapeze, want something quicker than a Vareo. I see people racing them, nuff said. Resale value is important in most people's worlds, you can afford a new(ish?) car/bike/boat, you can't afford another one in three years if the first one can't be sold for a 'fair' amount. Established classes meet that, the depreciation of a new Solo over a couple of years is probably quite appealing. People who have cash to throw around on dead ends do not make up a large slice of the racing dinghy market.

I hate this constant no fleets no resale market attitude (not just aimed at you RS400) the fleets will develop with the right strategy. But it needs people to be early adopters and be brave enough to make it happen. It also needs a class association to work closely with the dealer. The amount I know about the whole Icon picture can be written on the back of a fag packet. I don’t even know where they are with regards to class association setup. I would think Blaze720 is the best person to comment about the strategy and class. I would have no problems buying into a class if I understood the road map ahead. It’s something we struggled with early on with the D1, but actually now we have a clear direction, which is something we can sell to people. more importantly we now have a small but critical mass which gives us foundations to build on. It’s starting to work well for us, we have found our market, we know where we are going, we know what we want to achieve and there are long term plans and strategies to help this. I am sure this would work for the Icon, but it does need the early adopters and the drive for it to succeed for it to...err succeed |

For a two sail boat i think you'd be pleasantly surprised having watched it being developed up close.
