No fair enough, re the 300 - but what about 600? They still making them?
At the end of the day I am just saying they are a business and a fairly successful one at that who won't chuck money at something once it's repaid the investment and the cash flow doesn't warrant it.

Indeed; and given the class/manufacturer used this forum so extensively during the development and launch I think that is why the interest remains ... you have to take the rough with the smooth ...

Don't read this thread if it bores you ...

Suspect the initial investment will have been recovered a looooong time ago on that volume, so its laughing all the way to the bank since then, followed by slow winding down into obselesence / wilderness as soon as the cash flow from that product starts to look marginal. 5 to 10 y and they won't be stocking parts.

it's not bashing- it's questioning with dry humour the decisions the class is taking / making.

It's a new class, one that represents over £2.4m* of real punter investment into 'dinghy development' over the past 3 years or so.  Nothing else has seemingly come close to that level of market acceptance from launch for as long as I can remember- not as long as some admittedly.  But conversely there seems to be a fairly high turnover of owners- I've nothing to benchmark that gut feel to, but a look at who's sailing them now verses who was in the first traunch doesn't show much cross over.  Is that 'normal'... I dunno, but numbers are down- both at the nationals and the worlds, so going in the right direction given the level of investment? Even a quick look through the club results of Hayling & Datchet you'd see the activity has a marked drop off from a year or so ago.  They both had a proper fleet of them didn't they?

Anyway, I don't think anyone is bashing it in a conventional sailing forum '4 knot sh*tbox' rinse-down, and I don't want to take anything away from the World Champ- although it's interesting to note that he's made a comment about getting the 8.4 next time.

(conservative fag pack estimate- £8k x 300 private new sale boats)

Think the RS100 bashing is getting a bit tedious folks, especially when it extends to about three simultaneous topics...

not adequate enough to race mano-a-mano against the proper ISAF class though?   Wink

I guess it would be cadged together like that, although I'm not sure the chaps in the girlie rig will appreciate their title being seen as the subsidiary... especially as, objectively looking at it, it's their numbers which are contributing the most to meet the overall requirements of 30 boats.

We had used the exception for having no IJ for a couple of Worlds in the B14s, but this year were fortunate to get sponsorship to cover their costs. They promptly set about causing mild chaos with their interpretation of Rule 42 as applied to boats surfing down waves...
