In answer to the chaps question - neither of those is pumping.  If you're changing direction you're permitted to trim the hull and the sail to facilitate it.  

The next question is, when do changes in direction breach rule 42?  That's a trickier one to answer...

ooching....  not good form, put it the same category as ripping the ass out of a wetsuit for 'over hiking'.... it's just not gentlemanly.

With regards the three pumps per wave.... I think it got outlawed just after Noah got back to dry land.

What about running up and down the boat, I recall that essential surfing action was also frowned on once upon a time..

Is nobody going to answer the fellas question? Before I admit I haven't a clue either and would actually like to know, unfortunately I gave my carefully printed and bound copy of the rules away to our lead Merlin Bandit on his fiftieth birthday, hinting I might have made a few changes, thus ensuring he read it cover to cover.

Neither 1 nor 2 break a rule! When you change course you may trim.

One pump per wave or gust to intitate planing or durfing is allowed. If you are already surfing or planing you may not pump. If planing or surfing conditions do not exist you may not pump.
