The original rules simply said "the RS100 maybe raced with either 8.4 or 10.2 sails".
The 7.4 came along later at the request of very light, or less experienced sailors....was it fundamentally a training or leisure sail or would it develop into a significant entity - there was no master plan. It has proved a quite popular accessory. The class has certainly welcomed any 7.4s to any event with open arms, a good way to gain confidence on the race course. this was done by a SI's event by event. The new rule change is intended to sort the relationship between 8.4 and 10.2's - the above rule was vague on purpose to see how things evolved: What we know and suspected from day 1 is that a 10.2 with a big guy is generally faster (in some, not all, conditions) than a smaller guy on 8.4. But not by much, hence the 2 sailing together with one set of results most of the time. But the situation did need to be clarified. This rule change was put together after a winter's discussion amongst the class The new rule I suspect could have been worded more clearly, and will be before going into the rules: The intention of this rule echoed the original vision of the class, and has now been voted in is... 8.4 and 10.2 Classes sail for separate results at championship level, even when starting together. At RS100 Class Association organised events, when racing for one set of results, PY will be used, and sub 86 kg cannot use 10.2. In an 8.4 championship sailors may weigh anything. In a 10.2 championship sailors may weigh anything. At club level anybody can use anything, but changing rig during a series will constitute a new entry (just like radial / 4.7). This of course is upto the club, but it becomes a simple decision if the club thinks of 8.4 and 10.2 as separate classes. 7.4 will continue to be invited along to race alongside 8.4s using SI change. Maybe this will be formalised into the rules at some point. It may or may not get a PY - thats upto the clubs. Having just caught up with this staggering thread, it is clear that either you lot have too much time on your hands or the RS100 committee worded this rule change badly...probably both!!! Anyway happy sailing to you all,

Nick

Oh, OK. I don't know for sure but suspect its just that the proposed new rule just wasnt drafted with quite enough thought. I think it will be revised before acceptance
Cheers By the way is that a (laser) 2000 sail number? Edited by r2d2 - 25 May 13 at 7:21pm |

My point is why does the new rule omit the 7.4? It is a simple question. |

Errr ... Are we not discussing a new rule under vote that was penned after the introduction of the 7.4? |

![]() Added to which there is precedent for using the 7.4 at official events. 2 were used at the 2011 Nationals and a 7.4 has also been used at opens. The class has dealt quite happily with this non-issue thank you. Hanna, do not be put off coming to an event (when you are ready) by all this nonsense. You will of course be welcome and there will be no problem with use of a 7.4. I'm also about to shoot off and have a great race in my 100, on a pond, RTC, using my 10.2 whilst weighing under 86kg

This is all rubbish. The class rules don't mention the 7.4 simply because it didn't exist when they were written. So they need updating (for those to whom this is really important), but lets have no more of this bollox about not letting people sail or race (or whatever divisive crappy rules is rules excuses you want to come up with)!

Would you let a laser 4.7 sail off a radial handicap? Especially if it were blowing dogs off chains. What about opens and championships?

Not really, there was quite a bit of discussion at the design stage about kites and the larger kite was clearly the winner, people seemed to want the thrill down wind!
Personally, if you are going to have 3 mains why not 2 kites! Gives you so many more ways to be out of class!
