Not so with a Finn. Upwind, when the rig is matched to the helm there's no nicer boat to sail and you don't have to be the gorilla people say you have to be, unless of course the competion is 6'4" and 100 kg.

I guess in a Finn or Phantom you hang onto the sail area upwind to have it for going down hill. In a boat with a kite, you can bung more sail up, so the need to have the big main is lessened?

One of the things I can't figure out is why the 10.2 should be such a struggle for the bigger boys?
From the numbers perspective the sail area vs RM does not seem any worse than other boats. The sail is modern, out of modern materials and works on a carbon rig. All of that suggests it should be easier than many other large sailed boats. I would have thought that the sail area to RM is much bigger for Finns/Phantoms and therefore they should be much harder work. So why are people struggling with the 10.2? |
