I think having that support takes a lot of stress out the situation for volunteers.
Much easier/less stressful obeying direction, rather than having to organise, decide, argue why the course is that way etc etc etc

There is room for both small volunteer clubs and pay and play types.
I am sure (and hope) that the latter will spring up. I am a little suprised that Laser and Topper didn't try this sort of thing in the mid 90's. I could just have imagined a professionally staffes club where no-one owns a boat but you hire Lasers, Radials, 2000s, 4000s and Picos either on a daily, monthly or yearly basis. No big outlay, no maintanence, class racing, no duties. That's got to appeal to many folk. A David Lloyd type club, with gym, badminton, spa etc to compliment the sailing. Sounds like it could be good, but full of t*ssers. |

Well Laser and Topper didn't do it, but Sunsail, Nelisen etc did, they just found it worked better to fly people to places the water was warmer and the sun hotter to do it! But, of course they don't really do racing. And that's the bit I really can't get my head around happening in the "pay and sail model". People who are really interested in dinghy racing (the equivalent of the people who are in local football or hockey teams - not those who might pay to play the odd game at a local leisure centre) are not going to find racing in a well used, pot luck, dinghy a great deal of fun. And most professionally run pay and sail centres are going to find providing a race team, results officer etc expensive, and not worth the while since they won't get many takers. Of course the likes of Weymouth will survive, and provide good racing at a price, but the centre on your local seafront or puddle? So as long as there are committed dinghy racers there are going to be people who are committed to encouraging others to join in, to keep the numbers up, to keep the racing more interesting, and to keep the numbers racing in a reachable area to maintain a critical mass for at least one club in a manageable catchment area. And the more of them who get involved in that the more successful they are likely to be.

It's only 30p I think, but then our yearly fees only come to about £145 including dinghy park, etc. come on down to our solo open on the 2nd June as I will be sailing my dads solo if it doesn't sink with me in it. We could battle at the back of the fleet....

The community clubs in Toronto are close to this model. Im not sure if they offer pay and sail but the clubs own most of the boats and the members mostly use club boats which I believe are drawn lots for so any duff boats are shared around. Boats and crews are mixed around with both helm and crews getting points for race results there is a separate prize for the crew with the best results (irrespective of helm/boat) There are around 8 such clubs in Toronto, for example: Their Friday night club races can get 90 Albacores racing together! And of course they all do 20 knots! Edited by JohnW - 16 May 13 at 7:30pm |

I don't want to race. Have no desire to never have. When looking around at what my local clubs offer (Hythe, Calshot) then one states in its rule that you must take part in duties the other doesn't now i don't mind helping out occasionally but i dont have a lot of free time as I like to spend time with my family, i work full time and im also a Scout leader. So i don't want to have to give up what time i have to sail to do duties espically if th eduties are to do with something that i have no intrest in being part of. I have yet to make up my mind what to do so for now i just launch from a public slipway sail where and in what direction i want and keep my boat at home.

Thats fair enough Owen but you as a Scout leader must appreciate that every organisation needs volunteers to help run the club or organisation. Or you have paid staff. Imagine how expensive Scouts would be if all the leaders were paid for the actual time they spend on organising everything.

Our club only has one paid employee......me. I get paid to clean the club once a week. This is a good idea. Because I am paid (a pittance) I do it every week and properly. There is always soap at the basins and bog paper in the bogs. You could never do this with a grudging volunteer. I like it because I use it to pay for my Presentation Evening Tickets and my fees. When these are paid I take the money and spend it on beer.

I do appreciate it that. but if your time is limited then somewhere which inforces duties on you will not appeal where as if they say that they expect you to put turns in to doing things then i have no problem as it would meen doing them when you can fit them in such as in winter when not sailing or doing other things.
