So, it will be regional sailing centres with rotomoulds that control sailing in the UK except at the highest levels where the rya will retreat to, protected in their ivory tower by the Olympic regime that controls all sport in the world other than that controlled by their arch rivals FIFA.
The regional centres will quash all other attempts at setting up sailing in the country other the rebel cvrda who will hold small events on tiny puddles to prevent detection. All attempts at sailing on the sea other than those authorised by the rya at great expense to the participants will be met with the use of violence by small fast patrol boats, armed of course. Your boat will be sunk and you will be forced to take up football...... What a sailing utopia Edited by maxibuddah - 16 May 13 at 3:35pm |

Windsurfing kind of self destructed when it became a planing only then destination sport, now let me qualify that, compared to sailing dinghies, Windsurfing is still in rude health, I bet ten times more boards than dinghy boats get sold each year. Where racing continued, the clubs supporting it prospered, hell there would be no H&SSC had we not been around to rescue it after the initial shock of the Assym revolution decimated the Scorpion fleet in the early nineties was it? The problem is with a limited budget and high cost, Windsurfers tended to keep their short fun planing board and pursue high winds, rather than travel around racing under forever changing rules and regulations, then along came the Olympics to wipe out the one remaining One Design fleet with it's Orange Juice and ten o clock bedtime forced down the throats of the class that begat the Bognor Gays, Carlsberg Happy Hours, Vodka RedBull and took Bognor Birdman to new lows... |

what a load of nonsense Maxi... no one controls anything.
You simply get access to water and arranged infrastructure for whatever boat you have, if you don't have a boat, no problem come and use one of the centre's Vago/Xenon/RS Bahias where we will pair you up. As for the RYA... hmmm, if they played their cards right they'd effectively retain regulatory obligations. And much as I find some of their performance spiral bad news, they're far better placed to be the custodians of sailing than some faceless department in Whitehall.

hardly... sounds like more like an enterprise opportunity, that could offer part-time non-vocational work for students and retirees who would ultimately be the 'go to' workforce for such a business model- admittedly run probably at a little over break even on a NFP basis at best. For years we've paid our experienced teenagers to facilitate training for newbies, why not pay them for running our racing too? It would at least something a bit less 'Green Party' of the current arrangements of the noddy puddle clubs... which rely heavily on those in socks and plastic sandals to carry the clipboards, dot the i's, man the committee boat confused to f*ck between a radial and full rig and to ensure that no one takes photos of anyone under the age of 18 enjoying sailing for fear of a parental reprisal on Facebook, if they can figure out how to sign up on it. Nor nothing like the other type of club- something far worse and butt-clenchingly retarded- yep the Blazers and Ties in the club house on a Sunday type of sailing club, who let's be honest- really, really think anything without a lead keel and an IRC rating as rather too plebeian to be associated with their royal charter anyway.

No fair enough but I may sound like an old man in saying that I think that sailing shouldn't be something that is consumed in the wholly disposable manner of an untaxed 3 quid coffee flavoured froth or a smartphone.
To my mind (and I know I am heading towards disappointment here) sailing is a holistic and life changing path that gives one a greater appreciation of ones environment, ones own capabilities, understanding tools and equipment, the build and the maintenance. Basically in the tradition of seafarers over history albeit for fun and the odd trophy rather than war it trade. I just think that a homogenised franchised pay as you go "sailing wank" experience isn't the means to that end and sells the sport short on the whole - lets be honest a quick go in a feva for a tenner cannot compete as an experience with a lot of other cost comparable that don't leave you wet and cold. I think that your proposed model has value for sure, and my club and others in sure run a few hire boats for members or signed in non members, but I would hate for that to become the main activity. Most small indy clubs do just fine and bump along generally on the strength and energies of volunteers who have yet to embrace a consumerist philosophy. I am even told that some of them like it! Some clever bloke once said that a volunteer is worth sixteen pressed men. I'm personally delighted that my club lacks a sheen of professionalism and maybe doesn't always run totally smoothly as it remains a great place to hang out and go sailing. |

There is, of course, the middle way. A voluntary base supported by paid 'professionals'...

unfortunately it often seems that volunteers are 'pressed men' and that maybe a little professional management - on and off the water - would work better. Anyway, if the clubs are bobbing along quite happily then the essence of this thread is redundant... no need to worry about it or 'promoting sailing' to gen-pop; we'll bob along regardless, no doubt evangelising our sport to deaf ears like the well trodden path of the Festival of Life, hoping we may convert the odd one or two fellow disciples along the way. Naturally, some folks will put in more than others, some of us will just show up for the coffee, a 10p cake and because we've got nothing better to do... c'est la vie.
