Turnover of you like. If you have no more coming in then natural wastage will eventually reduce a fixed number of incumbents to zero.
Most clubs will become uneconomic well before membership reaches zero. Even those lucky enough to have a freehold and free water have to pay insurance, maintenance, utilities and support boat costs. Let membership fall too far and the costs falling on individual members become impossible to bear.

so they consolidate and local area centres/clubs serve the local sailing population, rather than trying to market themselves and compete when there simply isn't the demand. Maxi's point is about critical mass for survival... if a leaking bucket isn't kept topped-up enough then eventually it will all run out. So we all spend a lot time and energy trying to filter water that wants to stay in that bucket. However if you extend the metaphor a little.... "get a smaller bucket" this will require less toping-up, the hole at bottom is proportionally smaller and as it will always rain naturally, so as long we keep the lip off and remain open and welcoming, the issue is self-resolving. In my opinion, we have a problem of our own making... too many clubs, too many classes, too many rules, and ultimately too much choice that the simplest one is to go for a bike ride instead.

Sometimes a shrinking club will be able to carry on till something untoward happens, like the flood at Evesham. The club then finds continuing to be not only uneconomic, but beyond the smaller membership to get running again.
Possibly, we will see new clubs opening that run on a different model, even using different rules? No racing (or "there and back again" races using 2 or 3 rules), just assy boats (rotomoulded?) owned by the club and hired out for blasting to members who pay a monthly fee? Not sure where the money comes from to start the whole thing up, though. I guess as a new business start up, not as a club at all. One dumbed down sport... |

or one that works for the 21st century. Rotomoulded, easy to use, community/business owned boats, leased out on a pay and play basis- much like a squash court for a local league.... sounds like a viable NFP model to me.

One dumbed down century... As I was writing the original post, I was thinking that it sounded quite nice - but then I thought it would take me maybe a month to get bored and want more, but it is likely that "more" would no longer exist, except in squad systems, as all traditionally run clubs would have folded as their members became to decrepit to sail any more, and too fixed in their ways to allow any changes at committee meetings. Of course, the latter could happen anyway, without the pay and play. And Minorca sailing works rather well, though maybe it would have to be done rather more cheaply! Would the David Lloyd Tennis model work? Swimming pools, bars, gyms, and a sailing lake? I guess many coastal YC's work on the bar being occupied by non-sailing members to pay some of the running costs. |

You've beaten me to it - was going to say that the future sailing club model probably won't look the same as it does now. I see a mixture of options from the small and local to large and corporate, but for me, there are too many small clubs out there, all trying to do the same thing. Dumbed down or not, it's already been said that there needs to be more than just racing to attract new people. Easy access combined with an environment which people want to go to irrespective of whether they actually want to sail or not will be key.
Let's face it - nearly every sailing club in the world is next to water, which attracts people if they want to get wet or not.

It's like mountain biking - you start off with a Halfords special, realise that having something that works and doesn't fall apart would be far more fun, then splash out on something proper...

But you're already an established sailor, one with the commitment to put the time and money in to make your sailing a unique experience you love. To expect someone who's not got the bug to look at what you or I, or any number of the other club sailors drifting around our ponds do, and covert that and want to get involved, well I think it's asking too much- no wonder the stereotypes of inaccessiblity sit. If there were a fleet of active rotomoulds that you could get in and get a good race (one where the rules make sense and the course is simplified)... well maybe that would be different? I see plenty of people at the Snowdome on the basic Burton rent kit (you get access to it free with paying your lift pass, a bit like bowling shoes at the lanes) I don't see anyone there who rides regularly on that kit though, they own their own... but we all share the slope, we can all take part and its always busy- too busy if I'm feeling mean spirited ;-) |
