You can sand most one designs - it is just a few SMODs that have such daft rules.
I've had to sand my 30 year old Lightning to try and get the worst of the gouges out. Maybe leaving them in would have been fast? Actually, I love a smooth bottom... but enough of that kind of thing - back to boats. |

Wrong as usual. It's perfectly logical. Because when one person does it, to compete everyone else does it too and we are all back to square one, but poorer. The only one who gains is the person selling the stuff. Where is the sense in that? The idea (for most of us anyway, we know you have special needs) of a sailing race is to be better at the sailing. It's not supposed to be like formula 1 where an army of techies spend millions making one car go imperceptibly quicker than another. We don't care. We just want decent racing - racing that is about the driver(s) not the vehicle. Furthermore, how easy will repairing a golf-ball surface me when some muppet sails into you or you get shore-dumped? Clue: next to impossible. So budget your insurance costs increase several-fold, as every decent bump creates a hull write-off. No thanks. As my dad used to say, when you can come ashore and say you got the start, every tack, gybe, wind shift, sail-trim adjustment, hoist, drop, mark rounding perfectly right, then perhaps you could spend some effort on that. But if you get all those things right, you will win by so far anyway, you won't need to bother. |

If you score the bottom of your EPS with a Stanley knife in the right directions you will thrash those Miracles and Solos once and for all ... I recommend deep scores 90 degrees to the water flow. Best achieved with a rusty blade, remember always cut towards yourself and use your thumb to mark the point where you want the score to stop ...

The old AC boats for a while used a sticky-back plastic with grooves, carefully applied so the grooves were at 90° to the predicted water flow. I think the groove size was the same as 400grit sanding.
I don't think you are allowed to sand the hull finish of most one-designs - ( def not lasers ). |

Used to sail a boat called Hydrophobia, but if you sail with someone called Raby*... it was a quick un too. Perhaps this is why * being afraid of water is a symptom of rabies

How can you say that? Totally illogical, like the replica sail but not replica hull anathema, y'all spend thousands developing faster sails, yet the simple practice of golf balling the underside of the hull for example might improve performance whilst improving structural rigidity and reducing weight, it's typical dinghy luddite mania.. Or you just buy this spray stuff like I'm going to for the next FOM and no-one will notice as it's clear when dry and the surface only goes like fish skin once the boat is in the water. |

...and well before that - before even Mark Spitz in the dodgy 'tache and budgie smuggler days I'm sure they were talking about this tech in 70s Americas Cup 12 metres and before Mind those were the days we painted boats with graphite based paint, sanded it smooth and looked like coal-miners at the end of a shift as a consequence
