When I was hitting my twenties in the early 90's most people didn't go to uni, they got jobs.
Since then apprenticeships seemed to be looked down on, kids must get themselves to uni to better themselves. Even when grants were still just about available post grads never had any money to carry on sailing after uni let alone things are now. The pressure from government t get to uni might well have had an effect on that demographic. Also these days compared to the seventies shows that they is so much more to do. Back then it was football, rugby or sailing in our area or cricket in the summer. Nowadays there is hap years and travelling around the world, everything under the sun outdoors and gaming/Internet indoors. There just isn't time to commit to sailing. If I was starting now post uni I don't think that I could find time to sail. It takes real commitment now that wasn't required years ago.

Matt, I think you are right. The 18-35yr olds were always a small die hard bunch, and now that I am about to pass out of that group I can see it all happening again. More and more mid to late 30s guys are coming back to the sport as the 18yr olds drop away and try to establish livelehoods.
I do however feel that the generation who passed through their teens sailing in the late 80s and 90s took what was available, whereas todays teenagers expect perfection or they walk away. Maybe their actions in the years to come will bring about a significant change in the sport. Anyway back to the thread, I guess there has been no further news on the validity of the Fireball win. It'll be interesting to see what happens at the next sailjuice event? |

We all know that sailing isn't what it used to be, the modern lifestyle will probably never allow what used to work to get people on the water. We also know that we have a big gap with the 18-35 year olds conspicuously absent from many clubs. I love this harking back to utopia....now I missed the boom days in the 50-70s, but caught up in the late eighties and nineties. I recall the same gap then as well.

And do you know what GRF I'm really tempted to join them (less the vomiting and cherub bits). Because I am fed up with the same knock the dinghy scene theme all the time. I wonder how many have gone for the same reason. Controversy is one thing....but the endless repetition and weaving in to just about every thread is wearing. Give it a rest please.

Hmm have I missed something here? Apart from the usual suspects, one of which is one of the regulars sole purpose in posting, I think it's fairly measured. Everyone's entitled to their opinion, and the more of them there are, the better the forum. Like it or not forums flourish with controversy, it doesn't worry me, if I get to the point where I genuinely feel to much animosity, I'd shove off for a bit, have on the odd occasion, they moan, but they don't exactly take up the batten and post with any more flourish. There is plenty of space for all, it's not as if this forum was exactly busy and loads have left, other than the vomitting on each other Cherubs.. |

There does seem to be a stigma attached to being a crew which seems to put a lot of da youf off especially when they get a bit more independent. Amongst young lads there also appears to be a real clammer to be the first amongst mates to buy a musto skiff. In my day at 17 we all crewed for others or sailed lasers and the only thing we clammered for was our driving licence.
Moving back to the fantastic response against iGrf I think it's worth considering how those not so forum familiar view the rantings on here. I am absolutely sure that a great number of possible users are put off by what is said and many just want genuine advice but aren't willing to put up with the aggressive responses. I don't mind the tone on here but then I'm often considered a bit rude and brash and I've grown up with t'internet. I am ever mindful though that there is a considerable group who are far better mannered and more respectful who we could all help out. |

I crew in a top miracle and one of my helms jobs is the trophies, as such I often get asked to announce the prizes. I always make sure I make a big thing about the crews, afterall they did beat the helms! I think this is really important as we have a lot of kids crewing and we need to keep them interested in sailing.

That must be in part down to the fact they never get the credit that is due to them as an essential part of the team. Why the helm should take all the honours, I find embarrassing personally, the higher the level of sailing, the more important the crew becomes imv. |
