Hi Mongrel and Rupert
for the record I spent more time than most with Banks sails on the boat I was racing so fully agree they can be very quick especially the spinnakers. It says in the statement that they own a machine in italy that manufacturers sails. As we are talking tape drive here does that not mean the tapes are affixed to the membrane before the panels are put together in Southampton.

So I would say ONLY 50% of build is in the UK.

I must need a drink to be discussing this any more.

Why is that?
Could it be because those are the classes that offer the best racing, therefore attracting a lot of the best sailors?

If you look at the classes attrracting good levels of quality support in the UK lately, I think you see a general trend of not changing too quickly.
A new class might come along now and then, but classes like Merlins, Fireballs RS400's are strong because people can keep the same boat for several years and be competitive at the top level. They are kept on their toes by circuit sailors who may have a boat some years old but can still take the odd  scalp from cheque book sailors and semi-pro's.

People playing football don't go moaning that they need to be playing with a higher tech ball.
Sailing (dinghy racing) is competing against people, the rules and equipment are a framework for that.

Sorry my geography may be rubbish but I do not live near the Italian Riviera! Or is this what global warming means.
For the record, Banks Sails have built every dinghy sail they have ever sold in the Southampton loft.

I assume Banks meant they make the membrane sail CLOTH in Italy?

Banks make the Lightning class sails. The Mylar ones are a very nice radial cut, and the Dacron ones have just been changed to Radial, too - yet to see one of them, though - hopefully at the show. Good to hear they are making everything in the UK. I'd imagine Lightning 55 is still out there, so just as well it isn't Speeds branding on them.

Guys - there is an issue displaying this page on Internet Explorer, nothing more, nothing less...  c'mon, use a better browser!

gotta feel for the class association guys... not easy, they should be patting their sailor on the back, not be forced into a corner of feeding him to the lions just 'cos some muppet at Banks/Speed/Purple/Sailboats presumably didn't ask the race office and/or make their team member aware of the legalise.
