Why is that? Could it be because those are the classes that offer the best racing, therefore attracting a lot of the best sailors? If you look at the classes attrracting good levels of quality support in the UK lately, I think you see a general trend of not changing too quickly. A new class might come along now and then, but classes like Merlins, Fireballs RS400's are strong because people can keep the same boat for several years and be competitive at the top level. They are kept on their toes by circuit sailors who may have a boat some years old but can still take the odd scalp from cheque book sailors and semi-pro's. People playing football don't go moaning that they need to be playing with a higher tech ball. Sailing (dinghy racing) is competing against people, the rules and equipment are a framework for that. |

Hi Mongrel and Rupert
for the record I spent more time than most with Banks sails on the boat I was racing so fully agree they can be very quick especially the spinnakers. It says in the statement that they own a machine in italy that manufacturers sails. As we are talking tape drive here does that not mean the tapes are affixed to the membrane before the panels are put together in Southampton. So I would say ONLY 50% of build is in the UK. I must need a drink to be discussing this any more. ![]() |

Hi Gordon
sorry once again but no - I was there watching sails being made.................not in Italy, nor China but the loft in Sarisbury green/Park Gate.(I even took some pics that I hope will one day feature in an interesting piece on the whole topic of sailmaking) I will though declare an interest - I was there in a 'work' capacity, as an independant/freelance writer following up some detail on a story that in all other terms was nothing to do with Banks - but they were generous with letting me see various processes at first hand. I also ought to declare an interest with regard to Speed Sails. As a freelancer, I got the job of writing the press article a few years back when 'aero-web' was launched. I had no other involvement with Speed other than a commission to write a page of text that said what was needed to be said, without mentioning the words tape or drive anywhere in the text - nor do I have any links to Speed now. I have though begun to suspect that a couple of the posters on this topic may not be all they seem, with some who may have vested interests in the topic - maybe they should also do the honourable thing and declare their interest! D PS - didn't you and malcom have a Banks spinnaker on the 505? One that made yoy very quick downwind? |

Hi Dougal
we did have some nice sails from Banks and I sailed with Hugh for a few years in his Dutchman and were not slow either. I am only going from Davids own statement. Do you ever her from Pit pig, I saw him when we had a J class talk last year. Hope your well. Gordon |

True, sailing is about competing against people, but also new people, new people who wonder why you're still using old crap like a fireball which hasn't been modified much since it was developed in 1962, this furore almost got me looking at it, we're looking for a new ride in the single trapeze stakes, but hell look at it will you, it's ancient and not everyone wants to join the CVRDA. The irony that hull could look quite reasonable with a modern rig, but all the time the vested interest of the luddite owners is appeased, it'll just be what it is, an antediluvian class that won't even wear lipstick. |

I think that the Cups sailed in the IACC boats indicated that actually the North 3DL plant just made the cloth, not the sails, due to the built in country restrictions. However I could be wrong, and they might have allowed sails to be built wherever, and only hulls were restricted to built in country.

To IGRF- Poppycock; you clearly know nothing.
Older classes offer cheap, entry level sailing for beginners, giving ample opportunity to discover the joys of our beloved sport without spending a fortune at the Boat Show on something no one sails or certainly races. They remain popular because they are good, quite often, better, than any of the newer classes that have been introduced over the last decade or so.

Dude, normally, you need more than two posts to insult me and elicit any kind of response, to me you're just another sad relic from a time long gone that won't wake up or wise up, but I'm going to cut you a break, now enough of the insults or I'll push the report button, you need to serve your time like I did, before you call me or anyone else a fool, or suggest I know nothing when precisely the opposite is the case these days.
