I am new to the concept of 'trial by forum', but perhaps it's just a modern Jury system. Perhaps I shall change my name to Alice Nutter.

I must confess, I didn't know what my sail number was until I saw the photograph on Monday. You should know that the reason we use the 5 is due to the evolution of the glyph and it's historically low-drag shape. I accept that due consideration must be given to race officers, whom have possibly the hardest job in these sorts of events.

As with all traditional classes, applying old rules in new ways is clearly somewhat stretching. The thought of paying twice the price for 3DL-type technology ought to be a sobering one.

I look forward to the coming season, where I shall again try to 'sail in the dark bits' and 'point at the mark', and leave you with this:

Welcome. Perhaps you could provide us with the facts ... that will end the discussion ASAP.

Is "Bigfattony" wrong and the Fireball class rules do infact permit the tape drive sails?

Do the RRS and/or the Fireball class rules permit the use of substitute sail numbers?

My reading of the rules is that the Race Organiser simply does not have the power to permit deviation from class rules.....

There are no class rules in terms of a handicap race.
Conforming to a set of class rules merely assures you a certain handicap.
It's the same set of rules as yacht racing remember.
One week you can race an X332 in X332 class racing, the next week you can take it out of class and race it under CHS with a bigger spinnaker or something.
Of course in the yacht handicap, they have a proper system namely the IRC certificate where changes are declared and accounted for. It's all open and works, even with serious money and the odd lawyer taking part.
Of course is the NoR says only members of recognised classes may enter, that is different. How many entrants were not members of their class association? Or did we want to cherry-pick the class rules?

The NOR included:

"1.3 All boats will be required to sail according to their respective class rules, particularly regarding WEIGHT EQUALISING rules. However, under Rule 87, class rules which permit pumping, rocking and ooching in certain wind conditions and/or change penalty turns (rules 44.1 and 44.2) are suspended for the purposes of this regatta."

That seems clear enough, but should it have been 'All boats shall....'?

"However, in Britain, the very formal written English used in drafting laws and regulations requires the use of shall with a third-person subject for stating requirements....." quoting from a random grammar mumbo-jumbo website!

Anyway, well sailed that Fireball, nobody protested in the time limit, and I for one don't think the sails will have made any real difference compared to new sails of other types.

As Laser Sails are only permitted from the official builder and must have the button on to be considered a Laser sail then anything else is not permitted. The class rules are very clear cut on this.

You could however sail as a fidget99 which is exactly the same as a Laser but has a 'replica/training' sail instead of an official sail. You would not be eligable for class prizes at that point though and may have to accept a different PY/start time. Not to mention that the rest of the Laser fleet might not be impressed, but they are grumpy usually anyway  Wink.

As for the Fireball, it has been pointed out the class rules listed are 2011. the 2012 or even 2013 rules may permit this type of sail.

What makes you think there are 2012 and or 2013 rules?  New rules arn't published every year.  there was a minor amendment in May 2012 but that had nothing to do with sail reinforcement etc

Why do forums struggle so much to establish the facts?
