thanks sandgrounder. It doesnt make good reading for Dobson and Brearey, as the rules state that tape drive sails fall down on the Fireball reinforcement rule that states where the tapes are allowed to be. The tapes count as primary reinforcement which has to be within a certain distance from the corners of the sail. They're outside this distance and therefore the sail is illegal and is not class legal

Perhaps Matt Biggs' results should be reinstated if sailjuice and Rutland SC are happy to let things slip past.

I'm sure that Dobson and Brearey are aware that the sails are not legal and i hope that they are not just keeping their heads down untill this goes away.

We used to have this problem, some times sail numbers were so ridiculously long and the fleets so big it was damn near impossible to record positions, so the Open Class issued the number to the sailor which he carried from board to board and many of us clung onto them for years, I was K58 and even when it switched to GBR, held onto the number, which periodically they used to auction has members dropped out.

It was also a method to spot and separate out semi pro jocks from the amateur which by the sounds of things need doing now to dingho world.

We would never have permitted lots of folk riding the same number though, how can that work?

So the easy way to stop them doing it, is mess up their results, they'll soon stop.

And as for that bullsh*t line about the 'development' coming from those lipstick on pig boat outfits, shut up will you, what benefit does that bring other than making cheats out of the consumer base in the eyes of most self respecting sailors...

or complete contempt for the 'value' of these handicap regattas...  'shabby' was a good word for it.

A pedantic point perhaps - but it is of little use class rules being posted where the average race officer/judge cannot access them. If the class benfits from International status the version of the class rules on the ISAF website should be the current official version. I have been at events where there were 3 versions of the class rules. As it was an International Class we took the ISAF website version.

to be fair, I think the link to the rules posted above leads to exactly the same set of rules that are on the ISAF site, i.e., the 2011 set

I did download the 2012 rules but all it says is "Blank page" or words to that effect.

I thank you for your kind words.

I really enjoyed the weekend and was ecstatic to win as I am a great advocate of what the Tiger Trophy stands for. It was also good to stretch the legs and brain after Christmas!

I am new to the concept of 'trial by forum', but perhaps it's just a modern Jury system. Perhaps I shall change my name to Alice Nutter.

I must confess, I didn't know what my sail number was until I saw the photograph on Monday. You should know that the reason we use the 5 is due to the evolution of the glyph and it's historically low-drag shape. I accept that due consideration must be given to race officers, whom have possibly the hardest job in these sorts of events.

As with all traditional classes, applying old rules in new ways is clearly somewhat stretching. The thought of paying twice the price for 3DL-type technology ought to be a sobering one.

I look forward to the coming season, where I shall again try to 'sail in the dark bits' and 'point at the mark', and leave you with this:
"Our wretched species is so made that those who walk on the well-trodden path always throw stones at those who are showing a new road" -Voltaire

Regards

Ian Dobson
