I'm surprised that they have done this after the Merlin debacle a couple of years ago.

This thread has acieved their objectives. Plenty of publicity. I wouldnt have twigged that the 55 was referring to Speed Sails.

As long as you apply to the RO to use a sail that does not have your number on then usually that is fine.

The RO is perfectly entitled to refuse the request...

As for the potential issue with the Fireball sails I would hope that the same mistake was not made 2 years on the trot.

If the sails are illegal, the fireball shouldn't get a result.
I'm sure that Matt Biggs won't be best pleased that banks/speed sails have blatently flouted the rules again and have managed to get away with it. Matt Biggs was forced to retire previously when using the sails illegally, and as for speed sails repeating the "mistake," it is just not on.
They obviously know that they are cheating and i think it shows a lack of respect for the sailing community and the other racers taking part.

But we do not know if this is the case until we can find the latest copy of the Fireball Class rules that state that it is or isn't legal.
Needs to sail more...

Perhaps they just think any publicity is good, it's working in that case.

Regardless of the latest rules, the only question you need to know the answer to is - did the sails have a measuement signature on?

Would a Laser with a Rooster sail be allowed in these events? If so then not a deal of difference really.

Yes as long as the Rooster sailor tells the RO what he is doing. The RO can then accept the boat and allocate an appropiate handicap. They may chose to give it the same number as a class legal Laser.

Too doctrinaire IMNSHO. I don't think there's anything very wrong with racing with a set of sails that were bought to measure, are intended to measure but haven't been measured yet. I mean, heck, who among us has bought sails and not used them until they've been measured? There's not even really anything wrong if it turns out the sailmaker has stuffed up and they end up having to be returned to have the odd millimetre or two cut off.

In the case of the notorious Merlin sails the sails were known not to measure before the event. I think that's a rather different situation.
