Are Banks making the sails based on the old Speed templates then?

My reading of the rules is that the Race Organiser simply does not have the power to permit deviation from class rules. So to put anything like that in the NOR would be to open a huge can of worms. This whole business of adherence to class rules could do with a bit of clarification I think: some brave soul or club really needs to escalate it to the RYA.

Sail numbers... I just went looking for the bit in the rules I was sure was there about permission to sail with incorrect numbers... I can't find it either in the current RRS or RYA prescriptions... Interesting: has anyone better eyes than me.

In any case I suggest to the speed sails contingent that they consider what their situation would be in the event of a Black flag start with the sail number 55 shown at the windward mark...

OK so there's more chance with deliberately identical sail numbers, but to avoid doubt, surely any display of black flagged sail numbers at a handicap event should include the class, as with multiple classes nothing prevents two boats carrying the same number?

As for the number you should carry:

G1 ISAF CLASS BOATS G1.1 Identification Every boat of an ISAF Class shall carry on her mainsail and, as provided in rules G1.3(d) and G1.3(e) for letters and numbers only, on her spinnaker and headsail .... (c) a sail number of no more than four digits allotted by her national authority or, when so required by the class rules, by the class association. The four-digit limitation does not apply to classes whose ISAF membership or recognition took effect before 1 April 1997. Alternatively, if permitted in the class rules, an owner may be allotted a personal sail number by the relevant issuing authority, which may be used on all his boats in that class. Sails measured before 31 March 1999 shall comply with rule G1.1 or with the rules applicable at the time of measurement

There's actually no provision I can find for anyone to ever enter under the "wrong" number; that it is a frequently accepted practice (borrowed sails etc) is another matter.

What is more, because they are independant and do actually 'make' their sails, they have a damn good idea how to make changes. The Contender sail they made for me recently - to a very different and 'demanding' set of requirements, is a superb sail that works just how i wanted it too and is very well made.   D
