I have only ever raced L2000's in club racing which is round the cans and that is where I was coming from. I'm not criticising the L2000 circuit in any way, I just feel that club racing is suffering because every new boat design seems to have an assymetric rather than a conventional spinnaker and assymetircs are never going to be suited to 'normal' club racing. (Apologies of course to the Icon and X1 which are bucking this trend). |

But the L2000 circuit is based on proper W/L courses, so the racing is pretty good actually

I have always found the L2000 to be a great boat, but under powered. To me it very succesfully bridges the gap between a boat you can take young kids/elderly parents out in and also get some decent racing. However, I agree, why did they have to stick a gennaker on it? When will boat manufacturers realise gennakers are complete crap unless you have dedicated windward/leeward racing.* Back to the point, Laser selling the 2000 to RS smells to me of a need for quick cash (as someone has already pointed out). The rest of their product range looks pretty weak - I suspect that profits from the Laser are supporting the rest of the range as their target market seems to be sailing schools who buy in bulk at volume discount (and hence low profits for Laser). If this is the case it doesn't strike me as a particularly viable business strategy. *Edit - I should have made it clear I was talkng about RACING boats only Edited by Dougal - 12 Jan 13 at 7:56pm |

I don't know about "not developing new dinghies" but seems like a very sensible business decision to me. Puts RS into an active class (I was surprised to see how active when I looked a couple of years ago), and although I'm sure there are significant costs in buying the tooling, rights etc, it saves development costs and the concern of bringing a "new" design to the current market. With a lot of boats already out there it also provided a ready market for spares etc which will support RS financially as they establish production and ongoing support. |

Hasnt LPE pretty much non existant in europe now. All there stock is now sold through purple marine, they were non existant at the boat show last year. Its not a bad thing it being the rs2000, rs are pretty supportive of all there classes but it doesnt fit in with the range that they were building does it. Was hoping to see something new being designed by them but as the 900 off the cards thats unlikly to happen.

L2000 looks like quite a nice boat (always looks somewhat under-canvassed though to me). All they need to do is get rid of that f***ing stupid gennaker and put a proper spinnaker on it ...

I like the idea of the 2000 - good class racing, stable platform for beginner/intermediate to move into, pretty robust, never need to de-power, reasonable sail plan so can sail in silly stuff, a good fun boat when the breeze is up.
However, weigh a ton and overpriced.

Like some other things - sailing is more enjoyable when you do it with someone else

I see this as like flogging off your wedding ring when you've reached the bottom of the barrel. It's probably the quickest route to an injection of cash. And Paramedic is spot on, a far better boat than the Vision.

Maybe they want to concentrate more on 'Laser performance *---- pushchairs'
Seems to be a lot of business politics going on, what with the unresolved builders rights issues over the Laser 1, or the Laser SB3 now known as the SB20 rather than anything that reflects on the success of a particular boat.
