Although not strictly speaking a boat, still a piece of sailing kit!
I've for the last year or so banked on my crew member having a knife on my ISO, but looking ahead to the new season it is probably time to get my own, especially when we swap roles and I'm out on the trapeze. But I have absolutely no idea the difference between one knife and another, so any suggestions would be very much appreciated! Thanks! Ali

If you want to use it for threatening your helm when he has teabagged you one too many times, get one with a nice, sharp point.
Otherwise, get one with a blunt nose but a serrated bit on the blade to cut through tough stuff quicker. Can't help on names, but I know I have one with a bright green handle which supposedly floats (I think) and has a shackle key on the blade. |

Get two Knives one for your harness e.g. http://www.gillmarine.com/gb/products/harness-rescue-tool-419/793 Magic marine do a similar knife.and another fixed blade, to be fixed on the boat so either of you can get to it in an emergency.

Thanks guys!
I've been looking at the Gill Personal Rescue knife, on the right lines? kevg - the harness tool doesn't look particularly substantial, would it actually cut through much? I worry about the knife attached to the boat, if it turtles and it becomes too tricky to access what happens, that why I thought/presumed it would be better to actually have one on my person?

The Gill Personal rescue looks good.
The harness type will cut through straps of a trapeze harness or the rope on the trapeze but not thicker rope such as main or jib. Harness type are designed to be quickly deployed. Think about an entrapment situation, can you get your knife out your pocket and open it up?
Yes I'd view the knife on the boats as additional but useful if either of you forgets theirs or drops it in a panic!
