Funnily enough I had just bought my 3 year old daughters a globe that can be lit up....£14.99 from Lidl and they love it.

I notice AT is talking about taking the great circle routes between ice gates, so that is what the competitors are doing in real life.

I'm going to assume that it's a proper globe - we'll only tell when we turn east in high latitudes...but I can't see how it could be otherwise.

There are plenty of resources on line for Ocean planning to get your route - Ill find tehm later.

I think I've figured out how they do the globe thing. At the equator the wind squares were 60nm x 60nm as we have been sailing south the longitudinal length has been shrinking, whereas the latitudinal length has stayed constant at 60 nm. At the latitude I'm at the longitudinal length is approaching 50nm and no doubt the further South I go, the shorter it will get.

Based on that I've decided on a long shot and I'm heading South to try and get through this messy wind zone into the steady wind in the South, where Eastwards movement will be so much quicker cause the distance to travel becomes less. That's the theory, lets see if I can hold my nerve.....

We still have to go North of the first mark though? (pass to Stb)

There looks to be a corridor of southerly's between two weather systems that will take us east (and North of the first mark).  That's what I am aiming for so quick punt due south this morning.
What could possibly go wrong?

Yes, that was my plan. Seems everyone else is following!!
Still tricky to get the timing, positioning right.

Andy101, you seem to be sailing rings around me, always one square away in better wind lanes.....unfortunately can't do anything about it as I think I've just got to get as much south in this wind period as poss.

RB - not to sure about that, I think you have caught up slightly in the last week. I am carrying on a little south of east today & then hopefully gybing into a new wind direction and slightly more south tonight to stay in the corridor Dougal is refering to but it will be very tight & probable head winds in 36/48 hours even if I manage to avoid the hole. (if the system crashes tonight it will be very costly)

Meanwhile the boats a little further SE of us such as Gybe Funny who are flying at the mo will be in the Indian Ocean in a week if they can stay with the low!
