Yes it is looking good over by south america, I have now gone up the rankings a bit but the rankings are still pretty inaccurate considering everyone has to go round the bottom of africa. I am really hoping I manage to get lucky and find a decent southern ocean low.... fingers crossed.....

RB

i am sailing as Tad80 it has been difficult sticking west and seeing a constant decline of position as others decide to bail and head east worst dropped to around 270K place!!  Confused

now looking better but a long way to go and the transition in the deep south depression is not looking that easy currently. not sure if i will make the front that is forming near the turning mark or if i may have more headwinds and not have the option to dive south and use them later due the ice gate which will mean loosing some miles!!!  Ouch

and bootscooter has done really well and played some great shifts in the east and is still well ahead of me in the rankings and dtf!

Alex, you are looking in a great position to me - 10k ranking in a Westerly position has to be good. I'm a good 500+ miles directly behind you. Are you on the basic boat config?
One question. How are you managing to look at the weather so far ahead? I'm just using the game wind indicators and it is impossible to get a big picture view as you lose the arrows when you zoom out. I've seen on SA that some people are using real weather routing programs, but I don't have any myself.

Phew finally through the Doldrums, but there seems to be a bug in the software! Bolton sailing is currently 20° off the 6.5kts wind still doing 3.9kts, as the boats details aren't matching the map!

(I've just re-freshed again and its now showing correct speeds at 19:40)

So the big question now is can I catch up by taking the conservative route down the middle?

using pro sails

Sorry to those that see this as a sort of cheque book sailing!!! had credit remaining from years ago when you had to buy sail repair kits!!!!

Using no outside weather information or routing software have not even looked at the polars of the boat

for longer term plan and review by scrolling through the time forecasts in different locations you can pick up the fronts etc and see how they are moving at what distance / speed and then look fwd and estimate where it might be in xx days etc. So totally guess work, you win some you loose some!

No problem if you are using pro sails. I think Bootscooter has options as well.

Just good to know who you are playing with on a level field and to act as reference for progress. Also makes us who are a lot further back feel that little bit better about why we are so far behind Smile

(Having said that SA is keeping tabs on the basic config positions and I believe some people are in the 100s position wise.)

Last thing, I get confused who is who at times, so can I make the suggestion we put our VR name as a signature.

Good idea on the signature - I am still wondering who Marmite is as I can feel his breath on the backl of my neck...

Pro Sails - cheating in my book unless I have them!  Plan is to stay with standard configuration, I also am only using weaher from the game, not outside.

I thought I had set the signature.  Oops!  Dougal 13 is probably not that hard to work out though.

Craiggo - pop the kite and take a flyer!  We could all do with a laugh!

What could possibly go wrong?

Follow the real boats I reckon, most of us aren't to far behind them. I am probably a couple of grids west of where I would like to be.

Found a website called passageweather.com which I was using along with the BBC for the first week until someone on here explained to zoom in for the winds & grids Embarrassed, still gives a good overall picture of the potential holes ahead!
