Hoping to see something for single-handing about Contender length, with carbon spars, main and kite, flared sides or comfy racks to hike off (Aura over Blaze type), cassette style rudder, t-foil, dagger or c'board and weighing about 60kg all up. Should be possible to go tacking up shorelines out of the tide while delivering decent upwind performance and with a kite small enough, or flat enough, that it can actually be two-sailed on a beam or even tight-ish reach so it's not limited to W/L racing only on PY. I had pretty much the same idea, to the extent of trying to buy the Aura's wings. The idea was to size the beam and kite to be the smallest they could consistent with true asymmetric performance, upwind planing and kiteable reaching. Anyway, I thought it *might* be fun to put a picture up and let the flaming begin! |

no flaming- lovely looking modern design, nice size kite that might actually get used.
No major focus on pure speed in the design- just fun and thrills. A Blaze Mk 4. Sounds perfect. So anyone else in the Midlands want one? And Peaky, what's your first offer for the unit price on 20 of them?

Sustainable price is probably £8k, but 'off plan' price could be 15% less. And I'm sure I can do you a deal if you want 20 of them James!

Peaky,
Looks good.
Are you able to model how high the centreboard will be above the water when it is on its side?

Hi,
Thanks. Yes, I could do that (but haven't yet). I can take a look tomorrow, but as a guide would suggest it would be similar to a Blaze or Musto - the wings are not buoyant and the hull is not wide. |

I think designing a dinghy to sail 'tight' reaches with a kite is fraught with difficulty.
Whatever ratio of kite area to righting power you come up with, a random RTC will still throw up reaches that are marginal. And the faster the boat, the looser the reaches need to be, for a given wind strength. I wonder whether it would be better to design a boat that went well on a reach with its 'white' sails, and regard the kite as really for deep reaches/ runs? I'm wondering what other people's trains of thought are in determining the right size for a kite? Can we try to discuss what would be nice and fast all round to sail, rather than how to design a PY bandit for courses where the RS400 kite (e.g.) doesn't work very well? |

well simply go back through the discussion thread of the RS100 and watch how the kite got bigger, the target shifted and we ended up with the one-trick, w/l pony that it is. (if you want to use the kite that is...)
