I am a firm believer that if you 'borrow' money to do something whatever that is you should pay it back.

I know a lot of former students who are 'proud' they their load has been written off. This seriously annoys me. We are bringing our kids up to think that society owes them a living, owes them benefits and owes them education beyond the age of 18 where as in reality they should be taught that life is what they make of it and they should take responsibility for their actions and choices.

End of rant.....can we get back on topic now?

On the other hand society needs a certain number of academics, scientists and engineers in order to function, just as it needs a certain number of nurses, plumbers, bin men and litter collectors. It seems to me a perfectly reasonable use of public money to subsidise the training of an *appropriate number* of all of those so that we get people doing the various jobs society needs.

I think its is still a little early to work out what the impact of these huge loans are going to be. I have two at Uni who got in before the hike. They will still come out with about £25K of debt from loans and tuition fees. Having two at Uni is a costly affair for us as well.

One thing students should consider is that this is not a continuation of state education. They are paying for a product. First they should use it and the other is that it should be of a merchantable quality. I have heard complaints from one of mine about crap lectures and the lecturer not turning up. They are now the customer and should expect value for money and should complain.

Looking ahead there are huge demands on the disposable income of post grads. Student debt, housing costs and pensions, all of which can only be inflationary. I've also had some subjective feedback of student numbers down which I suspect also means a dumbing down of entrance qualifications. We may see more reduction in fees as competition between the Unis ramps up over the coming years - at the moment the trough is deep enough for them all to dig their snouts in.

My hopes of them leaving uni and sending back brown bags of tenners so I can afford that Merlin are fading ....
Like some other things - sailing is more enjoyable when you do it with someone else

Is it a discount for students, or a tax on the rest of us? Wink

Peaky,

How about starting a separate thread for the Cobra and its development.

We can get them cheaper from Poland or India though.

its a cunning way to get people to do the low paid stuff. I thought that you only had to start paying back the loan once you earned a certain amount. Well if you stay below that you never have to. Everyone's always complaining that you can't get Brits doing the low paid stuff.

Anyway that Cobra looks nice
Everything I say is my opinion, honest
