I know this is an odd topic to be posting about now but now the 2016 skiff trials are out the way are we likely to see any new exciting boats on show at 2013.  Also any kit you might have heard about which could be around.

Hoping to see something for single-handing about Contender length, with carbon spars, main and kite, flared sides or comfy racks to hike off (Aura over Blaze type), cassette style rudder, t-foil, dagger or c'board and weighing about 60kg all up. Should be possible to go tacking up shorelines out of the tide while delivering decent upwind performance and with a kite small enough, or flat enough, that it can actually be two-sailed on a beam or even tight-ish reach so it's not limited to W/L racing only on PY.

You cannot get around the fact that a kite big enough to be fun downwind is only going to work on a beam reach in very light winds. And then you'd be better off with a bigger main.
Hiking single handers are limited by righting moment.
So what sort of desing windstrengh should they be looking at?

Why the cassette rudder? If you are going tacking up (or even gybing down) shorelines, a decent kick-up rudder might be better?

So we agree on long and light....

@ Peaky - yeah, something like that, glad I'm not alone in thinking about this stuff but you've gone one step further I see

@ RS400C - doesn't have to be a cassette rudder, I just don't like the un-intended rudder rake moments you get with some systems out there, but I do happily concede that the N12 type t-foil rudder arrangements are nice, believe Mr Truswell's new 14 has a pretty snappy arrangement, wonder how that's turning out?

- kite shape is always going to be a comprimise on a dinghy, you can only carry one and it has to be able to fulfill a number of roles.  The idea I have is a compromise between overall size and shape, so you can reach reasonably high with it up in lighter winds but still get down a run without gybing xx number of times, the kind of thing I had in mind is a bit like a higher-aspect foil that will work with the main when apparent wind sailing downwind, it's a single-hander too, so doesn't want to be a 'monster' you would be looking around for a crew to manage, I've only got two hands.... it's a design flaw apparently!

Sounds like a D1 or RS100, both will do those things

The kite on the Cobra is much smaller than a 700, smaller even than the 100, despite a much bigger beam. It is basically a Blaze sized boat with a 9.5m2 kite, whose whole purpose is to be RTC friendly. The kite is sized to be as small as it can get away with rather than as big as can be handled.
