It's a great event and well supported by the industry.
It is also well worth a visit to watch.
I have to say the invitation process is a little opac and would benefit from a revamp.
As they have gone to all the trouble of getting 25 new Xenons there why not invite the top 50 national champion helms from the national attendance table, and if any of the top 50 can't make it work your way down the list until you have 50.
Then run a qualification regatta on the Thursday/Friday to whittle it down to 25 then hold the event on the weekend.
The qualification could even be the previous weekend if the tides worked ....
That would give a bigger and more inclusive event with no-one moaning about lack of invitations and give the event wider interest and more for the media to get stuck into.
PS ... still can't see how the Merlin crew gets an entry as a helm, does that mean next year other crews from other classes can enter? Edited by 2547 - 03 Oct 12 at 11:13am |

What, take two days holiday to go ditch crawling in East Anglia, and maybe not even end up sailing in the main event? I bet National Champions who live north of say Birmingham will be queueing up for that one!

You already have the Friday as an acclimatization day ( which I /we didn't take, regrettably) so it would be 3 days off ( a 5 day event )!

aye, having it on weekdays is just daft!
As for the RS400, what with Nick sailing as Ent champion, we have no idea if the club sent an invite to the class, or if they checked first and saw who it was, or what happened. I don't think it's anything sinister; the guy's good but as far as I know isn't capable of sailing two boats simeltaneously.
Maybe he should have two "class" stickers on his jib?

or as I said the previous weekend. If people don't want to take up their invitation that is fine but for many this is a once in a lifetime chance to compete in the Champion of Champions regatta which is an honour and well worth the sacrafices to attend.

Also if you now notice they only have 25 boats when a few years back it was 30 perhaps the current climate is affecting them too or they do pick and chose who they want to come along to the event.

I'll bet all of these guys take far more leave than 2 days a year to go sailing. If the Endeavour is as prestigious as the class nationals, most of them wouldn't bulk at a couple of days holiday.

Exactly, it is an honour to represent your class at this event and I don't think it would be a problem. Anyway is anyone bulking about not getting a slot? |

I suppose that depends on whether they sail for the fun or the prestige... As for two consecutive weekends, all very well if you live in Essex, not so much fun if you're in Scotland, or even, for that matter, the Isle of Wight. Edited by JimC - 03 Oct 12 at 12:58pm |
