Simple- sailing on flat water, predominantly in light wind with plenty of eased off hiking off wind, shouldn't be an issue, esp at the top end of the weight range. Besides if it's windy and I'm overpowered, then I'm on my board anyway.
As opposed to driving to the coast to get a decent race and then loosening the toe-straps by a good foot. Hiking so damn hard upwind your ankles are where your calves were supposed to be just to stay competitive. Getting around the windward mark and instinctively breathing a huge sigh of relief, only to remember... f*ck, I need to hike even harder now otherwise this kite's pointless. ![]() Edited by pondmonkey - 28 Sep 12 at 1:52pm |

I had a look to see if I could find some training tips online, maybe a facebook group or something...
appears that when capsized one should take the opportunity to relax and get your head back in the game again. Sounds awfully civilised to me... I'll say hi when I meet him for you.

Your very own Maxibuddah executes the perfect gybe in 998, really showing how it should be done.
If you look through the rest of the footage from Haversham that year you will see such sailors as Lawrence Crispin putting it in on the gybe, it was windy, very windy, I know I was stood next to the cameraman as I'd wimped out myself.
Having said all that the Phantom is a pretty easy boat to gybe in most conditions (possibly the easiest I have ever sailed), its certainly a lot more stable through a gybe than a Solo....

Easiest boat to gybe I have sailed in big breeze flat water was the RS600, the hardest boat to tack in same conditions the RS 600. Awesome boat

That's one good example of why going to some class events and class training can make things easier. I found the 600 a nightmare to gybe after stepping out of a Laser- no doubt being shown a good technique and some coaching would have made a massive difference!!!! |
