nice reply, might need to work on judging the laylines a fair bit and also the closing speed difference could be quite alarming Tongue sailed a H5.9 a few times at mixed handicap events and it's blooming scary how quick you close-on and pass stuff like Mirrors, Toppers and Lasters, never mind Oppy's

I'm from the other side Rhosneigr :)
I would go for something plastic, so you can just leave it on the sand while you get the trolley. Tide goes out quite far! Also as the season is quite short over there, the plastic boats will fair better.
I've never sailed any of these (hopefully others can comment) but Pico/Feva the best bet

Certainly an excellent choice for two-up racing. The OP doesn't make it clear whether or not his single-handed sailing would be racing or simply pottering. If the former then a GP14 (together with most other dinghies) is out of the question. He could however potter/cruise in a GP14 provided he has a good reefing system.

This whole class bollox. It's another anachronism, like the bloody Optimist and all the other dross that kids are presented with in their world of hi tech, you lot just have no idea, is it any wonder the kids can't wait to do something else?
People sailed Mirrors then came back home and bathed in a metal bath in front of a coal fire whilst eking out an existence from their ration books whilst they worried about the new war in the Suez canal.
It is NOT a great class, it is a collection of people who sail a vintage boat and because they like the whole fifties feelgood factor they inflict it on their kids. It is a Junk boat, it even looks like a Junk.
Come on.
As to the class and the dysfunctional class 'system' that propagates the continued sailing of out moded designs rigorously defending against change for the better don't even get me started..

So GRF wants us all to sail in the PY fleet, with boats that are brand new and lose 30% when you drive them out of the dealers yard!

my I suggest a few basic truths:

- good racing is one design racing;
- the more boats on a one design start line the better the racing;
- the more second hand boats are available the easier it is to get into the class, which means more boats racing

My advice - find a club that you like. Look at what they sail. Choose a one design class that is popular at that club that suits your budget and physique. Do not read the adverts in the glossy yachting magazines. Ignore GRF. Have fun.

Only go for the high tech, publicity driven "classes" (products) if you have the money and the inclination - if you have an iPhone17, Windows 15, change your car every 6 months, leave that to (apologies for a 60s quote) the "dedicated followers of fashion". You have no obligation to support the boatbuilding industry.

gordon, I don't want you or any of your fellow luddites to do anything, just stop suggesting your dated ideas to others.

Basic truths.
1) There is no such thing as One design racing, since the important bit comes in different shapes, sizes and abilities.
2)The more boats on a line pretending to be the same make the inexperienced feel bad by a ratio of the number of boats on that line to one.
3)The more second hand boats there are, the more the rear of the fleet is populated by people who really have no reason to be there but week in week out that's where they will stay until they finally get fed up and do something else.

My advice, go to a club, find something faster and more obscure than what the local retards are using, sail all over them and ignore any results they work out, do it for the fun of your finishing place on the water and enjoy being last as much as you enjoy being first and try to work out why each incident occurred.

Merlin Rocket sailors would probably disagree with that statement and as a former Merlin Rocket sailor I do too.

Back to the original subject....

The problem as I see it is that some of the OPs requirements are contradictory. To go to a noticeably faster two-man class will mean a significantly larger sail area which could make single-handing very challenging for a novice. I think the OP needs to re-think which two of his requirements are the most important.

Best wishes from deep in the woods

Aye. Once more we hit the problem that two man boats never rerally make satisfactory single hander play things.
