Doh there you go again..
This whole class bollox. It's another anachronism, like the bloody Optimist and all the other dross that kids are presented with in their world of hi tech, you lot just have no idea, is it any wonder the kids can't wait to do something else? People sailed Mirrors then came back home and bathed in a metal bath in front of a coal fire whilst eking out an existence from their ration books whilst they worried about the new war in the Suez canal. It is NOT a great class, it is a collection of people who sail a vintage boat and because they like the whole fifties feelgood factor they inflict it on their kids. It is a Junk boat, it even looks like a Junk. Come on. As to the class and the dysfunctional class 'system' that propagates the continued sailing of out moded designs rigorously defending against change for the better don't even get me started..

So you'd have him buy a whizzbang 2050 - with no one to sail against, no one to advise him how to make it go faster, no one for him to sell it onto when he's 'upgrading' to the whizzbang 2060 (new graphics edition)?
Probably best to see what the options are at the sailing club- obviously if it's a choice between say Laser 2000s and Miracles, I'd probably advise the L2000- it's more modern, easy to use, can accomodate an extra passenger and has an established class structure to support resale. But if it's a choice between Miracles, 505s and no one to sail against in a VAGO... well I'd recommend the Miracle... simples.

doesn't the logic of GRFs argument mean he should be recommending the Project X (or its 2 handed equivalent)

Certainly an excellent choice for two-up racing. The OP doesn't make it clear whether or not his single-handed sailing would be racing or simply pottering. If the former then a GP14 (together with most other dinghies) is out of the question. He could however potter/cruise in a GP14 provided he has a good reefing system. |

If you read what I suggested, L3k, L2000 or RS200 RS400, there was no mention of project X, or the icon which yes I'd sooner see someone interested in that than a bloody mirror. Don't you people value having a boat building Industry? How are you going to get sparkling new products and ideas if you don't stop recommending old crap to newcomers? As it is the L3k is dead (but there is at least a very very nice exciting V3k that someone has put his balls on the line to produce) as have RS and Laser still producing L2000's. It's probably because I'm close to the sharp end of selling new stuff to folk, but surely you're not all so stupid you can't see the logic? Jesus the guy's got a 12 year old son, don't any of you remember being twelve and what it was like to do exciting things like going fast on your bike, riding no handed, building soap box carts and hurtling down hills and you want to condemn him to sailing a fecking Mirror? Jesus Wept.

I'm only kidding you GRF - I agree with trying to move things along and yes we should have newer more exciting stuff - like bikes which improve every year (only a bit) but cumulatively a lot if you compare today's MTB with say one from the mid-90s say - no comparison.
As a test I asked my 14 year old what he would want if he was moving on from a mirror and he said "a really fast catamaran" |
