Hi 

I am currently sailing an old wooden mirror for my 1st year in sailing, but was thinking of updating for next year, I was wondering what modern grp boat would be a good replacement which offered a little more dynamic sailing without losing too much stability 

I normally either sail alone or with my 12 year old son and would like to consider racing for next year

Graduate or Firefly if you want grp or Miracle if you can put up with wood.

These 'classical' boats will provide you with something quicker than a mirror but then if everyone races mirrors at your club then your best bet would be to buy a newer better mirror!

I strongly suggest having a look around your club and determining if there are any existing classes that are popular. If there are then get chatting and see if you can have a demo sail. If not then start talking to others in your position and draw in some advice from more experience members. Try and arrange to have a demo day or at least a sail in any options you might consider prior to agreeing on something and buying it.

Hi Steve,

If you're considering racing, please, please, please speak to the guys at your sailing club- find out what they sail & what the options are for joining an established class, most should offer a GRP alternative, even 'older designs' like the Graduate or Miracle.  

See if there's a particular group of folks you can gel with and who are friendly etc as you will get so much more from the racing experience if there are other people to race against, learn from and share a beer (and a coke for your son) afterwards.

Where about'd do you sail?  Is it inland or on the sea?

Stick with the Mirror and upgrade to a GRP one with a Spinnaker ( presuming you don't have one at present ). There is a lot more of dynamic sailing to be had from Mirrors.

Just look at the advice you're giving here..

Perpetuating the same old same old..

Sir the Mirror Dinghy is not sailing, it's an antiquated design suitable for innocents of the fifties as a cheap method to get on the water to see if you like it.

Sooner than you know, your 12 yr old son will be a teenager looking for a little more in his life with dad, so my advice get something a bit more modern and exciting, I started my girl off in a Laser 3k which we raced together until she got scared off by being crashed into by the idiots we had at our club at the time.

But seriously, ditch the Mirror and buy something else if it has to be second hand, then Laser 3000, (if you could afford it buy the V3k for real fun) or the Laser 2000 (not that exciting if you want to be super cautious) or a Vago, or look at some of the RS Boats, the RS200 is a fine boat as is the RS400, don't listen to those fools above they are patronising you because you used the word Mirror in your description of your sailing experience, move on, they are an anachronism perpetuated by folk who either don't or should know better.

And you lot, what is wrong with you?

Nobody should be recommended a bloody Mirror dinghy, not in this year of our good Lord 2012 ffs.

Doh, I do wonder about sanity around here at times.. Confused

Anyway Ian Walkers had a lot of fun in his mirror with his daughter this year.
Great boats for little money and great to learn as a 2 person, 3 sail boat.

There's some truth in that if you want to 'hook' your son in.  But I'll stand by my original advice of seeing what is being sailed at the club first.  It might be that your son does some sailing with you and the rest is with other kids at the club- maybe crewing something like the RS200 or V3000 in the post quoted above.

And agreed, personally I wouldn't recommend another Mirror- you've probably grown out of it now.

Totally agree that something else may be required as size now may be an issue with your son being 12 now.
Just get annoyed with mr grumpy slating a great class for no reason.
Anyway i would think twice about a 200 as although great boats are pretty tippy downwind especially depending on your experience. Hence if looking for a boat that sort of size the laser 2000 ticks a lot of boxes.
If you want something a little smaller than a 2000 but bigger than the mirror then a Rs feva's not a bad option.
