Umm it won't embed, but worth a look even though it isn't quite sailing.

Hmm, I think that needs further consideration.

I can assure you that normal carbon fibre composites are very, very much insulating. Carbon fibres themselves are one dimensional conductors, but standard epoxy resin is insulating- the fibres should be wetted out! I've seen panels come back from simulated lightning strikes with nasty big holes through them... (don't worry, it is sorted for plane wings) |

One thing you must avoid is being in the water. Apparently if there's a strike on the water nearby you provide a better path through the water than the water itself, which means you get a big current flowing across your body from arm to arm right through...

If you watch the (49er) video frame-by-frame at around the 19s mark, the lightning comes down between the camera and the boats, presumably striking the water. Next comes the much brighter bolt which looks as though it only comes down to 49er mast height, and the boat on port tack appears to trail smoke from its mast tip.

I remember reading about this incident in the Laser class mag circa 2004; Apparently the helm, Chris Meech was thrown 30 feet from his boat, which was totalled. Fortunately he wasn't badly hurt and was back out sailing a borrowed boat the next day! Link to pictures (page 20). Edited by Andymac - 13 Sep 12 at 6:42pm |

We did exactly what Flip flop suggested when I did the RS600 Eurocup at Garda back in 2002ish. We had a day where suddenly the wind stopped and the lightning started coming down. Tipped the boat over and sat watching the amazing light show.
