Generally the weather pattern at Garda is predictable (therma wind from the South) but occasionally it gets messed up and you get some very scary conditions. Having said that the local knowledge is so high that the race officers know when it's about to get dangerous.

As for damage done to boats and crew... Lighting is at such a high potential that it wll basically fry anything. Normally carbon masts will just explode into splinters and any one hanging off it will either be dead or in a very bad way - ask Tim Dean when you next see him.

If you do find yourself caught out in a lightning storm I would suggest you invert the boat and wait for it to pass. I know that would be the end of your race but sometimes there are more important things.

I did wonder if they shouldn't have postponed or abandoned the race given that there was a storm close by

The crew could also have been badly burned, possibly killed.

according a competitor (only via facebook) the lightning hit the hillside behind and not the mast, it's just the way it's lined up. You can tell it's actually distant by the gap between the lightning and the thunder.

If the lightning had hit a carbon mast it would of done quite a bit of damage.

So you can safely say that a lighting strike on a carbon mast has no effect!

I saw film once of someone who was trying to build a ramp (gently curving to flat) to land on, to take the speed away, but not seen anything since. Of course, it may have been him that I heard mention of when the cardboard box guy said one of his rivals to landing without a parachute was in a coma...

I think I'll stick to water based air-powered sports.

Crazy stuff.

But one of the guys (if not the one in the video) landed without a a parachute. Crazy. Into a load of cardboard boxes. Absolutely amazing.
