Back in the 90s we went over to Cowes during Cowes Week for a bit of spectating. As we were going over on the ferry we saw a big sign on another ferry saying something along the lines of 'Cowes home of the America's Cup'

Well of course that may or may not be a mute point, but I admired their nerve for stating it anyway.

Got to Cowes, went for a stroll and up by the Squadron there were a couple of big gorillas in smart security uniforms standing next to a glass box containing.... yes, the America's Cup!

It was after the Kiwis had won it and it had been returned to Garrards for a full spit and polish refurbishment.

Have to say that for an old claret jug it was truly impressive and shiny beyond belief. Doubt I'll get as close to it again (about 3 ft)

East Anglian Schools Regatta 1972 - 2nd. Crewing for a helm I had never sailed with before (Peter Bridgeman? Where are you now?), just 'cos we were the only two in the sailing club who went to school in Herts. All the rest woz Essex boyz.

Celebrities?

I had tea and sandwiches in the House of Lords with Lady Havers, Nigel Havers (who is now in Coronation Street) mother.

I built a wardrobe for Sally Whitaker now Sally Dinovar (Coronation Street). She was absolutely charming and made me lunch on my last day working

Sterling Moss spoke to me once, he said, "put it there".

No good, I am a failure no matter how I try......

I went to a mates wedding once, we were in the church and everyone stood up.  I turned round expecting to see the bride walk in but no, it was Prince Charles and the boys.  The bride did turn up eventually. Chuck also came to the reception, although for some reason he didn't look that interested in talking to me....

I did have a long chat with Mike Teague at Twickenham once, and on another occasion Martin Bayfield told a friend of mine to f*ck off.

No Andymac....of my own design and manufacture. That's what I used to do when I was a valid member of society.

Sterling Moss, I delivered a parcel to his house in Shepherds Market, Mayfair in 1966. The conversation ran thus,  me, "Where would you like this Mr Moss". Him, "Put it there".

I also sat next to Mike Hailwood on the pit wall in the Isle of Man 1964. He was ranting about crap Japanese chains, "Get me a f***ing Reynold chain" he said.

I saw John Surtees race bikes at Chrystal Palace and i also saw the afforementioned Sterling Moss race a Cooper Climax at the same location.

I worked with Stuart Grangers daughter Lindsey and I went to her 21st. It was full of film stars and Sandy Shaw who was hot at the time.

David Dickinson is a good friend as well.......this is getting ridiculous, can we stop all this and talk about matching luff curves to masts or low rocker hulls.....

That Prince Charles wrote to me once, I've still got the letter kicking about in the loft somewhere.

Back on track.
I have sailed in, 505 and FD worlds and Europeans with some very good helms.
1st round the windward mark in the fd euros in MarMenor (great venue but dont listen to the spanish 470 ladies who assure you the wind will drop so you take your light weather genoa out and trash it in force 6).
Sailed a admirals cup and one ton cup trials with Dave Pitman.
sailed a J24 with both Ado and Stuart Jardine no shouting just laughing aloud.
Now have been helming for a few years realising how bad I am compared with all the good helms I used to sail with.
Shared an Int 14 for one season.
Now loving my Phantom and Rear Commodore of Lee on the Solent sc.
Still out sailing more than most as I live 5 minutes from the sailing club and can launch whenever I get the chance.
Still want to have a go in a new rig 505, sail a 49er and lose 3 stone and get better in the Phantom.
How many other sports could Jim Berry have gone to a world champs at 79 in (505 legend).
