Two of us completed the Nore Race around the Thames Estuary in about '83 sailing our Contenders despite the dinghy classes being cancelled owing to high winds. The write up in Y&Y mentioned a couple of heroes...

I have been on the front cover of Y&Y

I have owned a £40,000, 28' twin axle motorhome.

I bought an early new RS800 with money my wife didn't know we had and called it 'Jane's Kitchen'

I helmed a Tornado for a year when we had class racing at TBYC in 1977.

I easily won the single handed race at the Mirror Nationals at age 14, knowing the whole way round that I had forgotten to take my tally...

I built a Duflos '62 Moth at age 18

I built 2 cold moulded Contenders from scratch (including making the plug) a few years later.
Ed Dubois redesigned the hull shape.

Albacore Junior World champion at Plymouth in '73.

Having owned 8 Lasers through the years I'm entitled to assert that it IS a good boat.

I have forgotten more than most people will ever know.

A bad day on the water still beats a good day in the office!
Laser number 9

Now I think about it......

I do have four wonderfull if grasping children and my daughter is the ladies Lingerie buyer for a well known (in Denmark) department store....not many fathers can say that!

I built a kichen for the Lord Chancellor in the House of Lords. That is not a euphamisim...I built a kitchen for the Lord Chancellor in the House of Lords

I paid £25.00 for a Laser II and sold it for £600.00

I did a port end flyer at the Tasar Nationals in Torbay rounding the windward mark in second. I should point out however that I was crew at the time and had no idea what was happening.

I have never had a sailing lesson in my life...perhaps this is why I am so dreadfull still.

I was on Anglia Television in 1960 when I was 4th in the Marblehead Nationals (model boats).

I can wiggle my ears, see I am not without talent.

Back when I was at school I had a poster of Fred Haywood (by poster I mean Boards magazine centrefold) on my wall. How old are you Graeme and why weren't you featured as a centrefold?! Wink

I actually was featured as a centrefold once by some dinghy magazine, don't get me started bragging for real, the Fred Heywood thing was just a personal thing.

Fred Heywoods speed record was set in the 80's, I didn't have a go at speed sailing until 2006 because I'd become the same age as my sail number and wanted to try something different and really thought I could design myself a rig that could beat the big guys, like my attempts at doing it in dinghies to date, I was wrong, but it was fun trying, I did beat his record though at 31 knots and as a personal best it was for me a big deal, if you'd told me back in 1985 that when i was fifty eight I'd build a weird sail and beat his speed, I'd never have believed it, even though everyone else was probably ten knots faster... Then if you told me back in 1985 I'd end up sailing a dinghy I'd have probably completely freaked out.. Evil Smile Just goes to show life goes on and keeps delivering surprises if you let it..

Edit, well it is a bragging thread, so here's a picture
The sail, with fully internal adjustable luff curve, an interesting idea which did actually work..
